I was at the junk yard today looking for some extra headlights when I came across the mazda millenia. There maf is huge compared to ours. Is it probable to use this maf or are the signals so far off that it wont work. Does any one have factual info on this.?
 
ya looks like it. I know the plug will fit. the honey comb is double mesh. and my whole deal with this is the car is super chargedso this thing is meant for high flow. Im super tempted to buy it but funds are low right now..
 
Another thing I noticed is the honey comb is different for the kl versus the kj although people say its the same in function. I guess well see what people say in the morning. At least its something new to talk about.
 
You can not just put any Mass Air on a car.

The mass air makes a voltage depending on how fast the air is passing. The ECU is calibrated to read the volume / Minute based on the voltage at that time.

Also, the stock Mass Air is not the choke point on the mazda, it is the throttle body.

you put this on, and you will probably bust your car due to a lean condition. It will feel very powerful, but it will have nothing to do with the Air Flow being less restricted, it will be because less fuel is being delivered by the ECU.
 
they dont want that much but I already orderd a full size radiator and a couple new resonaters so Im good on spending for now. And yes Brian I know you cant just throw a maf on. Im very aware of the consequences that could happen. I was just asking if any one had ever tried and what result if any. I would assume if it did read that you would lean out but it all depends on the calibration of the unit. well until someone chimes in and says they tried and failed well never know but its an Idea and maybe in the future ill check it out just to rev the motor at idle. But not now Im focused on smog time.
 
here is how you could see how close they are safelty

1st. you need a way to datalog the stock maf
2nd. install the new maf in the intake alongside the stock MAF (keep them far apart that they dont cause each others readings to skew). leave the stock maf plugged in. Wire up the new MAF so that it powers on, however the signal wire do not hook up to anything other than a datalogging device (or even a multimeter for a rough comparison at idle, part throttle and WOT etc).
3. drive around comparing the signals from the 2 mafs (the stock maf is providing the ecu signal, the millenia maf is getting datalogged for comparison of signals).
4. change the order of the MAFs and rerun the test to rule out any signal variances that might be attributed to having the MAFs before/after each other.

Once you get an idea of how similar the maf outputs are for the same amount of airflow you will have a pretty good idea of how far off the new maf signals are.

If they are the same (which most would bet they arent) then you could possibly plug/play.

If they are different then you will need to find a way to modify the maf signal to compensate for differences.
