Kartboy shifter / bushing question

I've been reading all the different install guides for shifters and bushings, and noticed something disturbing. The guide Kartboy puts up for the bushing seems to indicate that the sleeve/tube at the end of the shifter is about 2" in diameter, big enough that the smaller radius part of the bushings can slide into it. Thus, the bolt would be touching only the bushing. OK. Then I look at the TWM install guide. Now the tube/sleeve on the end of the shifter is small (3/4") with small rubber bushings pressed into it. Looking at the kartboy shifter I just got, and the twm shifters pictured, they are the same. What I don't see is how the kartboy bushings and shifter actually work together at all! The huge bushing provide no support whatsoever for the small sleeve of the shifter. Am I completely off my rocker, or is there something important no being said in all the install guides? I see alot of people having put both in, so it must work, I just don't see how.

by the way, it would be nice if somebody could rehost the pictures on the install howto. its sort of hard to follow without pictures.

Yes you are off your rocker.

The bushings don't go with the shifter (that's what I understand from your post anyway), they go up forward of the linkage towards the tranny.

Install the shifter first and then install the bushings.

Installing the shifter doesnt' have any effect on the bushing, and vice versa. You can do one w/o doing the other. The only convienience is being under the car anyway, so you may as well if that's your plan of action.

Find your rocker........

Glad to help! Now I just need to get my hands on some of those so I can install them in my P5.....

Just finished intalling them. OH MY GOD is it nice. changing the shifter itself was fairly easy. Only difficulty was the heat shield. tried bending the edge down with some pliers, but didn't work. Finally a bit of inspiration hit me, just screwed the shield back in place, and pulled down on it near the mounts. easily got the inch I needed, no metal touching anywhere. The bushing was a little more difficult, the problem being getting the original off. the heat shield on the muffler pipe was so close, that the bushing/rod hit it before coming off of the bolt, so had to loosen the shield and pry the bushing assembly off the bolt. another 15 minutes to get the bushing itself out, and then everything went great. now I just hope I got everything tight enough and nothing comes off . should have brought my locktite.

FYI

If you hear rattling when in gear, moving, and gas not pressed or you hear a whine that goes up in pitch as you accelerate, don't worry, it's just the added extra noise that is transferred from the tranny because of the bushings. You'll get used to it.

Sweet! Describe the difference for us who don't have one yet...
Well, it should be obvious - installing a shorter shifter makes your shifts shorter = a lot more fun and faster shifting.

The bushings eliminate play of the whole shifter housing. Kartboy said to test this play by: Putting the car into 1st gear and then pushing the stick forward. It should have a little play there, which is eliminated by the stiffer Kartboy bushings. If you see how the bushings play a part it it all you'll see why it does that.

Yes, that is obvious... :o

That's what I was interested in hearing about! ;)

right now, it is still all pretty stiff, escpecially 1st and reverse. however, the most noticable difference is that it feels like there are notches. it goes in gear, there is no wiggle, feels very solid. and shifting takes almost no movement. one gear to next is only like 3 inches, compared to like 10 for the original.

I also hear changing you tranny oil to motul or redline makes a bit of a difference in feel (smoother shifting). Try that out when you can...

I see several MSP owners who have these listed as a mod. Is it beneficial to upgrade the bushings even though we already have short shifters?

close, GS storm. I took the picture off the mfg site, mine is usually a lot dirtier.

Sweet, Ihave an old Schumacher .21 Extreme. It is a dang fast stadium truck. .21 is probably way to big for a 1/10 scale car but it's fun!! ;)

I agree, there aren't many 1/10 scales that will handle .21s very well, aside from some onroads and tmaxxs. It's nice to see someone else that enjoys rc also.
