Just installed my B&M shifter

I just finished installing my short shifter. The install went well but it took longer than expected. I put my old knob back on and it looks good. I went for a drive and all I can say is everyone should own one of these. Its very precise and smooth and short. It does take some more effort but i like the feeling. I payed $140 for it at Tripoint.

I have thought about installing a short shifter on mine but don't want to mess up the interior look. Does the knob and boot go back on and look relatively the same???

The stock knob screws straight back on. It sits a little shorter so the boot has to be tucked in. If you or anyone you know can sew have them make the boot smaller to get a cleaner look. All in all it looks very stock. I have the B&M short shifter part number 45071.

I have a P5. I'm not sure if the Mp3 has a different sized thread. But when I first wanted the B&M people said it was the 45079 that fit our cars. However I was sent a 45071 which isn't on their site but I believe it's an updated shifter because it gives instructions based on a 2001 protege. My stock knob fit on perfectly however I am looking into getting a different because the knob itself is rather high. Does anyone know if a voodoo knob would fit. what size would it have to be. thanks

i have a voodoo knob in my protege, but no pictures yet. it is a magnum knob, same as you would get if you had a miata.

Just for everyone's info, the Voodoo knob will fit any protege including the pro5 EXCEPT the MP3. For some reason, Mazda decided to change the standard thread on the MP3's shifter. The standard miata knob will thread right onto the short shifter but only the new part number (45071) the first generation ones like NC_MP3 has will not take the standard mazda thread.

Igot and installed b&m shorty and the knob did not fit it even says on the box that it would I agree It works awsome but trying to find another knob or a machine to rethread the knob is proving to be a pain :( other than that it is fine....

The stock knob will NOT fit on ANY B&M short shifter. Mazda used a strange thread and pitch on our stock shifters. If you get the old model number, like NC_MP3 has, you'll end up with a honda/acura pitch and tread, and the new model number like Dustobub has will be a standard mazda/nissan/mitsubishi pitch and tread. The stock shifter and knob are neither of these and does not share it's pitch and thread with any other manufacturer that I know of.

Yes, the Voodoo knob for the miata will fit your stock shifter no problem. Check out www.TeamVoodoo.com You can order right from the site. Voodoo Bob is a good guy and will take care of you.

can you use the mp3 shift knob??

just wondering is the B&M short shifter worth getting for the mp3??? or is it not much of a difference than the mp3 shifter also does the mp3 shift knob fit back or do you need a new knob?? thanks

I too have done the B&M short shifter change....and I can not speak for the MP3 guys...but for the P-5 folks...YES the stock shifter knob DOES thread right on the B&M shifter..the threads ARE the same....and IF you buy one of these...you want to ensure you get part number 45071, as it IS an updated design....there is a snap ring that holds our entire shifter assyembly in its housing....the first designs (part number 45079) pivot housing was a TAD too long, it has orings that are very tight and it will stay in place...the snap ring would not reinstall...B&M fixed that with the second release....45071...NOW it all goes back together just like it should.....it feels great. and for those of you that ask...or were wondering. here is what it looks like installed. the length of the shifter inside the car is 1 3/4 inches SHORTER.....the length below the car is increased by 1 3/8 inches....hence the shorter throw.

here is a comparison shot of the stock to the new shifter before installing

Has anyone out there installed B & M's Short Shifter on a PR5 with a leather wrapped stock shifter?
Any modifications necessary or will it bolt right on?

can we assume what you mean is the STOCK SHIFTER KNOB?

if that is what you mean....YES>...the threads on the stock shifter are the same as the B&M and vise a versa. The stock shift knob screws right on.

Yeah that's what I meant. Thanks for the info Sir Nuke (thumb)
