Are those still the standard Proxes tires on your car? Or did you switch them out for performance tires?

Ah. Yeah, I forgot that the 5 door came with different tires on it... so much for paying attention lol.

Specifically, Mazda puts different tires on for different markets. So while the N. American-spec Mazda3 with factory 17's comes with GoodYear RS-A's, it comes with Bridgestone Potenza's in other markets.

Similarly, while the N. American-spec Mazda3 factory 16's are Toyo's, other markets get Michelin's on the 16's (I believe they're Michelin Preceda's).

It's a business decision based on a few factors.

it's not just simply a business decision but also legalities... those potenzas and michelins quite possibly can't/don't meet the DOT standards but meeting the "inferior" (as NHTSA likes to claim) UNECE r30, JIS, and CCC standards... probably because those tire manufacturers didn't bother spending the money to get them certified... afterall, most *normal* street tires ought to meet ANY standard in the world anyway

Yeah, there's a chart somewhere around here that I put up that has the different tires they use. I think it's in the winter wheels topic, and one other.

"DOT" markings are a US invented thing.... AFAIK, all European countries (EU or not) follow the 1958 geneva transportation regulation agreements signed under the UNECE... your car does have ECE equipment as evident of your rear bumper's side reflectors... they are amber instead of red which is what the north american model has
this does not mean your country or other countries do not allow DOT stuff... some countries' vehicle regulations are more laxed than others... there may also be laws that state that vehicle manufacturers must conform to ECE regulations while private self importers do not have to meet such criteria and can import a DOT compliant vehicle... EU countries do require ECE only as "law conformity" seems to be favored
