I was at my local dealer getting an alignment done on my CX9 and struck up a conversation with one of the sales guys. I asked about the CX5 and he told me they just got a few in and took me out to look at one of them
Very impressive little CUV. I did not get to drive it but was able to sit in it and play with most of the goodies. They had 4 CX5s all with AWD and the Touring package. They all had Nav,Bose, Auto, SunRoof, Rear view camera, BSM, and sunroof with an MSRP of $27.5k. Sticker claims 25 city 31 highway with an avg of 28 mpg. It was very comfortable and had great visibility from the driver seat. Fit and finish were top notch inside the cabin. There was lots of room in all seating positions with a pretty large cargo area even with all seats in upright positions. They did not have any sticks, but did have several on order. All in all it looks like Mazda has hit a home run so far.
From reading the reviews online, it appears that there will eventually be a TDI variant which should get mid to high 30s MPG. I am always looking for my next car and I will have to say this is a very strong candidate to replace my HHR once my CX9 is paid off. It will be very interesting to see how they fair in real world driving conditions and I look forward to reading the comments on that board in the future especially concerning MPG.
If you are interested in the CX5 they are starting to appear at dealerships and IMO worth a drive to check one out.
