Could always run 16's in the winter too. That's what my friend does. Blizzaks are half the cost in 16 vs 18.

I don't think 16's clear MS3 calipers, but I'd imagine 17's would still be cheaper than 18's. My 185/70-14's were pretty darn cheap. :p

Winter tires FTW. My car is a tank in the winter with the Blizzaks. Plus it's fun to say "Blizzak".

Chippy, you know you're going to buy some new wheels/tires in the spring/summer so you might as well just buy winter tires and forget the all seasons. ;)

16 inch FD RX7 wheels and 16 inch steelies from Tirerack will clear MS3 calipers. So, yeah, I was looking into either those or a 17 inch wheel combo. I know winter tires are definitely the best. I'll have to grab some quick before the first snow...it could be anytime now... sigh

Thanks all!

Good info on the track cars! After Mid-Ohio, I found myself wondering the same thing...what would be the cheapest way to have a track car. lol I don't know that I'd jump right into a Miata, but I didn't know what other options were out there. The Miata does seem like the obvious choice though...

And this will be my 1st winter in a FWD car w/snow tires. The wife's 97 Cavalier we had for 6 years always held it's own in the snow on all season's. As long as you kept the tires spinning, it'd s*** and get. lol Everyone's got me pretty pumped up about these winter tires I bought though (Hankook Winter iPike 195/60/15's on steelies) so I'm looking forward to the snow flying!

Thanks Josh! So $250 plus a set of wheels (could be had for $150-200) and I have a winter setup. I really hadn't thought to use the Craigslist app on my phone. I'll put in a few searches tonight and see if I can't snag a good deal. I'm running so many options through my head right now, I can't even think straight. Maybe later I will lsit them all out (or just drop it completely for the day).

I'm really in no rush. Just before the first blizzard hits, which sometimes isn't until after Christmas. I mean, it may snow a little and be really cold/wet, but...

Thanks for all the help and encouragement from everyone!

I cruise craigslist when I'm bored, which is pretty much every night after the wife goes to bed. lol Always good stuff out there!

As awesome as snow tires are in the winter, if you have serviceable all seasons on the car right now why not tough it out 1 more winter? Ohio is real strange, we could get a crap load of snow like last winter, or 2 winters ago it could be real mild with below average snow.

^true story!

That was always my reason for never buying a 4WD, you only need it like, 12-15 times a winter. lol BUT, now that we have a 4WD vehicle, it's pretty much the most awesome thing ever and we'll never be without one, as long as we still live in snowy areas of course. haha

Crap, I want that set in Detroit.... I sell you my 18's :D

Ever hear of Spec E30?

Oooo I forgot about the E30. They aren't nearly as sexy as the Miata IMO. ;)

True... but the M30 motor at 6k+ makes an awesome singing sound.

Very true. SM's do not sound very appealing IMO.

I've never heard of ANYthing, other than Spec Miatas that you guys are always talking about. I've never been into any of this before I became interested in the p5's and joined this forum.

Yes please. I'd lean towards an E30 track car, except they don't seem as readily available, cheap, and repairs are probably more expensive.

Also, I'd run 944 cup, but there again--more costs... in our high school/freshman college years, a buddy had bought a porsche 944 and started stripping it for track use. But alas, college students with no money--nothing came of it. Now he races sportbikes...heh, it's a little cheaper way to go I guess, if you don't mind flying around at 130mph on two wheels in the open
