JosueP5's '03 Protege5 Build Thread.

I've got a can of MAF cleaner in the garage if youwant to borrow it. I've had the same can for years now. And if I recall bank #1 was like what Chris was saying. Not cylinder #1. I think maybe a vacuum leak. But when i had the vacuum leak, the CEL didn't turn itself off. But I only put 10 miles on it before I cleared it. I can't stand a CEL.

Fingers crossed!

-Cleaned the MAF sensor

-Cleaned EGR Valve

-May have found the P0701....2 of the intake manifold bolts could've been taken out with my fingers! Tightened all 7 down.

EGR was cake too. Those 4 little screws were actually allen/hex's on my valve, so they came out with ease. Brushed it out as best as I could, and oiled up the valve. I don't think it helped the idle any though, but ah well...like I said, it wasn't god awefull anymore.

That didn't last long.....big ******* middle finger of a check engine light again today. :(

I didn't bring the scanner home, so I'll have to check it tomorrow. I'm not sure what else it could be though? But, it's actually running a tad worse after yesterday's round of fixes...which leads me to believe that maybe I left something off or otherwise screwed up?

I didn't take much off to gain access to the EGR valve in the first place though, so I'm finding it hard to believe that I would screw up something so simple. I spent about an hour under the hood looking and feeling everything. lol Even pulled the plugs out to check the clogged injector theory, but none looked white/chalky.

Idea's?

I'll give it a try then.

I've got to believe that it popped back on because something is still wrong...but this is all new to me, so I don't know what to think...lol

WTF...that sucks.

What if my lean condition is low fuel pressure due to a failing fuel pump or clogged fuel filter? Am I just screwed into throwing random parts at this thing hoping it'll keep the CEL off?

Unless you get an upgraded fuel rail, there is no way to check it.

That's not true, the service manual shows you how to check the pressure on page 01-14-6. The only problem is that they use an SST which might be hard to come by (I don't know, I've never looked for one).

BTW, what code is causing the CEL to light up?

What's a SST?

and it's P0701 or something like that....scanner says system too lean in bank 1.

SST = Standard Service Tool (aka expensive dealer-only tools)

I can't find P0701 in the service manual, perhaps you're referring to P0171 (Fuel trim system too lean)?

Yea, that's the code it's throwing. I got the numbers mixed up walking from the parking lot to my tool box to get my phone and post the results. lol

What does the manual say to check?

Possible causes (in order of likeliness):
  • Misfire
  • HO2S (front) deterioration
  • HO2S (front) heater malfunction
  • PRC solenoid valve malfunction
  • Pressure regulator malfunction
  • Fuel pump malfunction
  • Fuel filter clogged or restricted
  • Fuel leakage on fuel line from fuel delivery pipe and fuel pump
  • Fuel return hose clogged
  • Leakage from exhaust system
  • Purge solenoid valve malfunction
  • Purge solenoid hoses improper connection
  • Insufficient compression

Step 1: Confirm your car is powered by an FS-DE
Step 2: Purchase Nuclear Fallout Safety Kit
Step 3:
