Jeff's MSP GTR Build

What happened to your hand? I seemed to have missed the part about you injuring yourself...

im just an idiot a while back I melted my glove onto my hand/arm while welding my 3" exhaust under the car as I didnt know I was on fire because I had a welding mask on and by the time I realized and was able to crawl out from under the car and get the glove off I got a bit burned up. no biggie and now you could hardly tell i was burnt there just some light scarring that chicks seem to dig so im in good shape.

Put straight VitaminE on that scar, IF you want it to look a little better, although its starting to be a little late now to have an effective impact.

Keep up the good work!!

well i started tuning the car last night. Until last night I kept afrs super rich just to be safe for shakedown runs. I started slowly working the afrs towards 12:1. At low boost ~7-8psi the car pulls like a MSP running 10+psi now. It was pig rich before.

Then after all the things that could have gone wrong...the alternator died? I could not figure wtf happened to it. It has been perfect up until I started really beating on it last night. The + tap on the alternator was in bad shape. The nut holding the wire on was disintegrated and the wire was all burned up bad.

I installed my spare which is a bit noisey, but works and reran the + line.

After going through the setup the only thing I could find that might have been wrong was that I had a 80 amp fuse on the MSD blaster coil. I just looked at a how-to and apparently it is supposed to be only a 60amp. I am not sure if that could have contributed, but everything else seems perfect so I am not sure what could have happened. The failure happened with the car running pig rich at 19psi, spinning the tires into 3rd. Suddenly a big backfire and the lights got dim immediately.

Also wondering what people would suggest for spark plugs and gapping. I have never run boost anywhere near 19psi before so I think I need to slow down a bit and look over potential weak links. I am running 94 pump btw.

here is a pic of how I wrapped the DP. It gets a little close to the waterneck and the hot side intake plumbing, but the wrap seems to be doing its job. For now boost it back to just 7-8psi until i figure out what caused the electrical demons at 19psi.

this engine loves boost. :)

For plugs a 7 heat range should do well and not be too hot. I prefer a good solid NGK v power over the newer style iridium or Platinum. They don't last as long but hold up well at 10 psi. I'm running a 6 heat range which is msp stock.

I would go 2 steps colder with a .28 gap. But only if you will be running 19psi all the time. lol

ya that is where things get tricky I spend over 2 hours a day in bumper to bumper traffic getting to/from work. But then when the road clears and i wanna have fun on the backroads closer to my house i need something that works at high boost.

lol Ideally I need a variable gap/heat range spark plug that changes on the fly, somebody hurry up and invent them already.

Hey man, nice build, I have been working on a similar build also but with the 1.8l mazda bpt & not the gtr engine swapped into a mazda protege 5, will post some pics & progress info later as I still have to get it tuned, hoping to achieve 275 - 300 hp at the wheels.

Cheers, nice to see the old school engine beating up on my new school buddies, lol!

that is what i am currently running just a normal bp with a turbo kit on it. gtr will go in once this engine lets go eventually. there is a jamaican guy doing the same thing as you! maybe he can help you find parts since he is closer. you should make your own build thread for people to see your setup!

thanks
here are a few more pics of the setup.
I lowered the boost back to 7psi (stock wg pressure) until
I can be sure that I am out of the woods with electrical
problems. I am still not 100% sure why my alternator died. It did have higher
mileage but I wanna make sure everything is 100% before I start upping the boost again.

gotta pick up the last few t-bolt clamps as well

sorry no fruit phones they are too expensive lol

i will get my friend to take a video sometime soon

brampton to wasaga and back x 3 and a few thousand kms of DD since the install and she is still going strong. My ebc solenoid gave up last night which kind of sucks as im back down to low boost 7psi so if anyone has a spare solenoid from a blitz sbc-id send me a pm!

ya but the problem is 94 gas is only available at certain pumps in the cities here, almost never in the country/back roads and I dont trust this setup for running 91 past 10psi so the EBC was nice to have. I found a new solenoid for $110 plus shipping still shopping around to see if I can find one for less. Im pretty sure these solenoids are not made specifically for EBCs Im pretty sure they just borrowed the solenoid from something else. So if I figure out what that something else is my guess is I can find the solenoids for much cheaper/free. I must be doing something right as I am getting over 600km per 55L of fuel even with the occasional 2-3-4 pulls on the way to/from work. Then again I have a stand alone, a bit of weight reduction and no AC or PS and I am sure that contributes a good deal, even when just sitting in traffic it must help quite a bit not having to spin the ac/ps pulleys.
