Jeff's MSP GTR Build

Geez. There's not gonna be much space between it and the firewall eh?

Pics installed? lolz. Can't wait to see how you're making that fit! :)

Plenty of room. Tightest spot is near the brake lines. the rest is flexible/movable.

I only had a 5 hour window of time to test these out this feb long weekend. in 5 hours i have the stock im out, the new one in, made a little brace to hold the stock throttle cable a bit better than just the gsxr throttle bracket pictured, made a base map made off my previous itb map with the megasquuirt, got the car running well enough to idle and take a few drives down the street, then pulled the manifold and had it back together. its so nice working on a setup with plenty of room. i just need a proper tps connector from gsxr as i dont think i will ever have it run great without running alpha-N instead of just map. with just map using tricks with one way valves i can get it running decent enough to get around town and make good power at WOT but transitional and WOT to no throttle never seems to work too well no matter how i tune it. i think the gsxr tps is true linear and not just on/off so it should be easy enough to program into MS and sort out.

Looking pretty sweet there man! If you don't mind I'm going to use your ITB pics as a reference when I go to the shop to get mine made.

im not hoping for much out of the bp05 as it is more of a test mule for trying out various intake/exhaust manifold and turbo setups when i get everything the way i like it I will swap in the gtr engine with toyota trans and try to make 300+whp on 94 pump gas with the great trans but its still just a bunch of talk as of now the car is back to n/a bp05 barely keeping up with stock 2.3 zx4 focus. then again when my speed was near stock fsdet i could just beat him by a few cars so its not an insane power difference, but still a 16 second car at best in n/a trim on a good day. the saab t25 turbo has been removed as the seals went shortly after it was installed for a few hundred miles and i am looking at t3s right now for the new turbo setup. with the turbo installed i ran 4.5psi and the car pulled OK and I got some experience tuning boost with the MS which was my main concern going into this as I had never tuned with anything as in depth as the MS unit so before I started screwing with the gtr motor I figured I would start with the bp05 and move to the gtr once all the complications have been worked out. If the bp05 dies tomorrow from some dumb mistake I wouldnt really be upset, if I break the GTR over something dumb like incorrect tuning I would be a bit more upset. Not like its worth a crazy amount or anything, but I have been very patient getting everything ready for a nice install with it from making my own wire tucked harness and fuse box to custom intake/exhaust manifolds. I just want to do it right the first time with the gtr. this bp05 setup gets hacked apart on a weekly basis for various test fits, wiring mods etc.

ya sounds like a good plan. I feel the same way about my build thats why im saving to make sure i can get a proper ems and tune the forged motor. I dont wanna end up damaging it.

bit of an update, i forgot to update my thread here for a while. i switched to a t04e turbocharger with gtx manifold and adaptor plate. I also screwed the egt trans so I replaced with another. The toyota trans swap is still coming, just not this season as I am still collecting parts slowly to make it work. (theres alot more to it than just buying a trans lol )

only thing i am worried about is a went a little too close to the water inlet with the downpipe. there is a few mm of room between them but when I wrap the downpipe they are touching..

I dont have much experience with wrapping exhaust, but i am hoping the wrap be a good enough thermal barrier to keep the heat out of the water inlet with the wrap just 1 layer thick on the DP and 1 layer on the rad hose.

Or do you guys think my rubber rad hose deteriorate quickly? It is so tight I cant get 2 layers so I am a little concerned. My other option is to take a hammer and make a few more mm of clearance in the downpipe with a few precise smacks. it would be ugly, but wrapped so nobody would see, though I would like to avoid doing this if possible.

i guess there is no way to know for sure until I drive it hard.

i am keeping the oil feed long for now as I am avoiding cutting it as I may need to use the line for another project down the road. it will get tucked nicely once its in the car.

I will post up some vids once I have time to tune her next week.

a quick summary of the setup.

Engine:
MegaSquirt ECU
RX-7 550cc Injectors
T3/T4 0.60/0.63
3" DP and exhaust
FMIC
Forge BOV
3" Intake Piping
MSD Blaster2 Coil

Weight Reduction:
No PS
No AC
No Under car horizontal brace piece (the name escapes me at the moment lol )
No Subwoofer
No Spare Tire
P5 rad (less capacity than MSP rad)
No catalytics
No EGR
No Stock ECU

I am hoping for the car to be well under 2800 and making ~300 flywheel HP on pump gas once I have a chance to get a good tune dialed in.

Should be alot of fun.

Once the setup is reliable I will be looking to put in my ITBS as well which will be the icing on the cake.

At this point it has been pretty much custom everything except that I returned to a OEM exhaust manifold and there was no way the tubular T25 manifold I had on previously could support the weight of the T04E turbo

Will Pope's water neck spacer work with your engine? I would guess not, but worth a look or see if he can source one for you.

i had one of those china chargers on my old talon, made good power, didnt last long at all tho :/ it was blowing smoke in no time, even with the restrictor

Can we please stop people from buying chinachargers? An American company like Garrett designs a turbo. A Chinese company buys one and copies it because copyright laws are pretty much non-existent there. They cut corners wherever they can, like journal bearings and then throw it on Ebay for 1/4 the price, and we as car enthusiasts buy it.

Copyright laws exist for a reason. I know spending $1400 on a $5-7k car is retarded, but we can't support these companies who steal designs and our jobs.

do you guys see the wheel gap in the front of my car in my sig? thats not a lift kit that I installed...when i lower the drivetrain into the car it barely lowers the front. i need to get lowering springs just to get it back to stock ride height.

1. i love my msp but a 10 year old mazda with 230,000 is worth about $1500 trade in $2500-$3000 cdn private sale on a good day in stock working order. I figure my car is worth $2000 plus mods on a good day. There are people selling built msps already making good power for 5-7k
2. if garrett usa is having financial problems then clearly they need to replace whoever is dragging them down and get back into competing in a global economy. i have no sorrow for them or their stock holders. as far as business is concerned if you cant compete with china then get out of the game or get on the winning team and have them work for you. its not like garrett doesnt have a history of outsourcing anyways so yada yada lets talk about it in some other thread
3. if it lasts 10 months then I paid $30/month to have a turbo that is capable of supplying boost to any powertrain I could ever afford to throw at it. I dont know what you guys pay for smokes in the states, but here thats the same as buying 3 packs of smokes a month. in short chump change. replacement takes less than 1 hour with my setup. or rebuild kits are $100. Odds are by the time it dies I will already have an entirely different drivetrain in the car (IE my gtr motor, hence the title of the thread, jeffs msp gtr build yada yada)

but thanks for all the comments guys nice to know people are reading the thread and giving opinions

well she is together and purrrs. very quiet aside from intake / bov sounds until the wastegate opens. I have run up to 13psi so far and it seems to be taking it well. I was worried about huge lag but it is very good. no there is not much action at 2500rpm but by 3500 power increase becomes noticable. if you have ever driven a 323gtx fwd the spool is similar but once 4500rpm comes things get really fun. 13psi comes very quickly. I ended up ovalizing the 3" dp and 3" intake to make them clear the waterneck and motor mount a bit better. Will take some new pics soon. tuning is still very conservative and I am estimating it is between 220-240 flywheel from 1.8l. Both the turbo and the engine can take more. Right now my only concern is the fmic. It is only rated to 300HP and I am really liking the idea of a water to air setup but still not sure of anything. Pulls like a FSDET with all the bolt ons tuned at 10psi, but doesnt die in the top end it just keeps pulling til rev limited. but it still needs lots of tuning before I start upping the boost.

lol the hand/arm healed ok but i have a scar. my GF likes it so I am in good shape.

i will take a few pics of the car tonight and a video when my buddy comes around later this week. I wrapped the whole downpipe last night so it looks alot better.

hit 19psi in 3rd gear last night, its very fun.
