I have a question regarding the ethnic comments...

To all people of asian background:

Is being called "oriental" derogatory? I have never thought it was, but I know someone that I used to work with that was suspended for using this term. I am NOT of asian background, so I am really curious as to the answer to this question.

the word ORIENTAL should only be used for RUGS and FOOD, not for people. Asian is the politically correct term. I take offence when somebody calls me Oriental..... in my mind, i'm thinking "what an ignorant SOB!"

I highly take offence to this. Kinda shows what kind of ignorance that still exsits today.

And thats the problem. People in America don't know the difference between Japanese, Asian, or most other cultures for that matter. So they don't usually mean to harm when they use terms like "Japanese" or "Oriental" they are just ignorant to the differences. And socitey has gotten out of control with the PC stuff...unless someone is using a remark for the intent to proke or insult you (really trying to insult) then let it go. I'm orignally from West Virginia and do you think I haven't heard every redneck, inbreed, no shoe wearin', sheep lovin' name on the planet? But do I really care about someone's ignorant slang term? Sticks and stones may break my bones....but names will never hurt me...

exactly so for example..."so yeah she had one of the best tasting oriental rugs ever" :D

And yeah ... Oriental is a rather generalized and narrow-minded term for Asian people. It's somewhat akin to calling the entire population of America Jewish. ;)

I don't quite see the analogy...but to each their own, I guess.

I am half Japanese, and imo, oriental and Japanese are two terms that should not be thrown around lightly or because someone is too lazy to type the extra -anese letters. It's just asking for flame. What if I said KKK because I was too lazy to type Caucasian?

Yet another good point with another terrible analogy. Given, calling a Japanese person a "Japanese" may be somewhat offensive, it at least "correct" in that it refers ONLY to Japanese people. However calling all white people "KKK" is just silly. While the KKK is prodominately white, 99.999% of white people are NOT in the KKK. Keep in mind, the KKK (let's call them K^3) hate certain groups white people too (Catholics, for example).

I don't want to sound negative, but I have had my share of racist acts shown to me at my expense. In fact, one of my used to be close friends thought it would be funny to carve the word gook on my door frame when his cousin was with him (I guess he just wanted to be funny and show off). I was pissed. IMO don't use any words that your gut tells you may be misconstrued.

It sounds like you're a bit more fussy than most people about racial slurs, etc. Friends of mine (keyword: FRIENDS) use racial slurs against me JOKINGLY, and I don't take offense to them because they in no way mean it. Although, I gotta say, carving it into your belongings is a bit harsh.

But how can you say KKK = lazy way of saying Caucasian? It's "white" .. not KKK. People need to stop being so tight assed... I couldn't care less if someone called me oriental, even though I am Asian. It doesn't matter to me if it is thrown around lightly. Some of you guys need to get off the "give me sympathy becaues I'm different attitude"... and others need to stop trying to be so damn Politically correct because they feel it needs to be done. As long as the intent was not to harm, who gives a damn.

Can't really disagree with you there. The only thing I'd suggest to people on the forum is just to realize that not everyone on here really knows you, and being that it's hard to read a "tone" from nothing but text, some people will assume the worst. Some people are touchier about it than most, so it's just easier to avoid the whole thing. Proof: If you had just typed out "Japanese" in your original post, we wouldn't be discussing this. :p

take my grandfather for example he was born in china and takes offense when called oriental because it's too much of a generalization he doesn't want to be associated with others...there are so many cultures in asia it's just not good to sum them up into one...

Right, and calling all whites "Caucasian" doesn't fit all the European culters under one umbrella. We all know how similar Russian and Italian cultures are that they should be generalized. :p

Granted, you don't take offense to being called an "oriental", and I'm not gonna fly off the handle if you call me a "Caucasian"...but I just think your grandfather's reasoning is rather silly. Just curious, have you ever heard him refer to someone as "Caucasian"? If so, I'll laugh. :D

hahaha...yeah i know my grandpa is so funny...maybe that's just how old people are...lol

no...unfortunately i've never heard him use "caucasian"...just remember though that there could be no caucASIAN without the ASIAN...he usually just mumbles something about the white devil in chinese...

can you taste the sarcasm for all of you about to jump on me

I don't quite see the analogy...but to each their own, I guess.

Well, "Oriental" is derived from "Orient", the label that first explorers of the western civilizations stuck on the eastern empires (namely China) that they came across. It eventually came to encompass an entire hemisphere ...

So ... just like there are a myriad of religions in America, there are hundreds of other cultures/ethnicities in Asia. So it would be just as large of a misnomer to lump all asians as "Orientals" as to call all Americans "Jewish" (I chose that religion by random ... It could have easily been Catholics, but hell ... Jewish is shorter, and I'm lazy. But I ended up typing "Catholics" anyway ... twice! Bastards! :D )

Don't mind me ... I'm in the mood to post *****. Muahah. (laugh) I want to get to 1000 already.

I dunno I just don't take offensive to labels, cause that is all they are. As mention if that is all they can say then it is not worth my time to get upset.

There is just to much tension going around lately with these labels. It is to the point where you are just better off calling someone "human".

Oh wait I am sure some PC freak will find something offensive in that.

hehe.

Here's the flaw I see. If I see say...a rug...from taiwan, and another one from Japan...they are BOTH Oriental rugs. The term "Oriental" may not be PC for whatever reason, but there's no mistaking it's meaning.

On the other hand, calling a rug made in France a "Jewish rug" is totally incorrect.

(I chose that religion by random ... It could have easily been Catholics, but hell ... Jewish is shorter, and I'm lazy. But I ended up typing "Catholics" anyway ... twice! Bastards! :D )

Hehe, figures.

those trucks are shiny.

ok with that out of the way, i personally don't like being called Oriental. It's a term that originates back to the days of western colonization of Asian countries, which contain a connotation of oppression by the 'white devils' (sundevil your grandpa is funny :D )

and i personally take pride in being 100% Chinese, and would rather not be confused with being called a Japanese (look I spelled it out! it's not hard!) or a Korean.

That being said, a lot of Koreans mistaken me as Korean. Many times when I go to the Korean grocery store, the cashier will start talking to me in Korean and I would be like, 'huh?'

Put would you punch or hold a grudge againts someone who called you Japanese or Korean?

There are ways to tell each culture apart but most people can not see these differences. Which isn't really a fault of their own cause there are many races that look the same out there.

Again.. "Japs" is short-term for "Japanese persons."

Japanese is only DEROGATORY or OFFENSIVE if it is meant to describe jewish spoiled females called "Jewish American Princess"

This is the first for of ethic slur I have ever seen that had its roots in poitical correctness.
Jewish "Amercian" Princess.
ARE YOU PEOPLE ******* SERIOUS!!!!!!!!!!
