It was bound to happen

Sory to hear about it (Its never cool to see a FS die)

I also thought it was common knowledge to not overboost in 5th (Anything past 7psi, in 5th at WOT is too stessfull on the motor, & too much of it and Pop goes the block)

And just because youve done it and your motor hasnt poped YET, doesnt mean your not over stressing the engine, and going like that it could Pop at anytime.

Why would you want to anyways, Im over 100mph in 4th gear. Looking for trouble?

total bummer man. drop in the new 2.0L from the mx-5. that'd be cool, if it fits of course.

2nd time i've seen something about 5th and boom today. I was actually looking forward to the turbo for the highway more than anything else.

So downshift to 4th is advised over passing in 5th I am thinking. I always thought I was putting more stress on the engine d/s at 75mph.

Nawww a Built FS engine or a KZLE

My Vote is a Turbo KZLE!!!!
do you mean KL-ZE?

bummer dude. I guess you knew it was just a matter of time. Going for a rebuild? I hope you have another car to drive around in. good luck

What do you mean by "full load" in 5th. WOT? How fast were you going? Where you using the stock MSP exhaust mani and turbo, or something bigger? I'm in the middle of boosting my p5, hence all the questions. This thread makes me scared...

I was running a wrx on the highway. 4th ends at what 110mph. Rights when I shifted into 5th and floored it about a second later it blew. Not using any msp components for my setup. I was using a T3 turbo. .42,.48 ar.

do you know what your A:F was at the time? I know of a couple people running 10psi with the mpi and extra injector setup on stock internals.

sorry to hear man

No afr's. I had the car tuned at 8 1/2 psi. But since open dp the car was hitting 10 1/2. But, from the begining the tune for the 8 1/2 was below average.

5th gear is bad to boost in WOT b/c of the load. think of a bicycle. on a smaller gear, you have to pedal extra hard to get going. there is alot of stress when you're pedaling this hard. same with your engine/tranny. there is a lot of load/stress in 5th gear. 1st gear has the least load/stress, that's why it's so easy to get to redline. i have an MSP with Unichip and I hardly ever WOT in 5th gear. 1st to 4th gear WOT, no problem. but 5th gear, i'm not really a fan of doing WOT and full boost. partial boost in 5th is fine, usually used for passing without downshifting to 4th.

And this was the first time I went WOT in 5th gear. The 1st time! I know I was running lean for a split second at 5200 rpms then back to ok afr's.

This is what happened. Here is a vid of it. I was running a wrx @15psi with open dp. He dyno'd at 247awhp. First time I ever boosted in 5th, and you could clearly hear my motor blow. The camera car is the wrx.

Uhh, no offense, but...

1-running 10psi on your car and having your motor blow is not "bound to happen". I know guys on stock motors running 10+psi on stock motors every damn day for a long time with zero issues. It's all about having a good tune.

2-Just like I said...it's all about having a good tune. NOT KNOWING your A:F ratios and running 10psi on a stock motor? That's a recipe for disaster. This has VERY little to do with boost and/or 5th gear, and EVERYTHING to do with the tune. How on earth did you have the thing tuned in the first place if you didn't know your A:F ratios? What were you tuning on, hopes and dreams??? Picking injector map numbers out of thin air???

I don't mean to sound harsh, and I'll help you out any way I can, but for the love of GOD man, KNOW YOUR A:F RATIOS AT ALL TIMES. IF YOU ARE BOOSTING A CAR, YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED A WIDBAND O2 SENSOR. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT HAVING ONE, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT CAN EASILY SAVE YOU FROM BLOWING YOUR MOTOR. I hate to sound rude, but if you're boosting your car and you don't know what your A:F ratios are, you're playing russian roulette.

Here you go, the lowest anyone is allowed to sell them for...AEM WBO2 sensor. Know your A:F ratio, at ALL TIMES.

Don't even THINK about boosting without one.

I feel bad for him that he didn't have anyone to save him from the inevitable. Russian roulette is a perfect description of what it is to boost and not know your air fuel ratios, especially at those levels. And to put blame on 10.5 psi is misinformation.
