i was interested in getting my windows tinted for the summer so i called around to get quotes. well, i found this shop near my house and they are supposed to be good. they've been in business for 20 years.

anyway, im talking to the guy and he tells me its $265. i tell him i want 35% all the way around and he tells me they can only tint according to state law which is no less than 35% on the rear and 50% on the sides. now i dont know what to do. i want to get it done at this shop, but i want 35%.

the price is a bit higher than the rest of the shops, but it comes with a nationwide lifetime warranty and that included the moonroof.

plus, this guy took the time (30 mins) to explain everything: how they would tint it and the differences between their tint jobs and other shops'. he was also explaining the state tint law and telling me about certain cops that only ticket people for tint. one cop in particular patrols one of the main streets here and pulls over everyone with tint. his goal is to write 17 tickets per day for tint adn he even has a light meter to see how much light can shine through your tint.

he said the only way to get 35% in the front is to get a note from my doctor saying that i sunburn easily or that i have sensitive eyes, which sounds a bit rediculous to me.

he was a nice guy and was very helpful, but i want it at 35% dammit! i dont know what to do.

Tell him to do it off-record. Thats how i get mine done. I pay the guy for therears which he writes me a receipt for. Then i give him cash for the fronts.
Just let the guy know that you will not hold him responsible...I dont see why he would have a prob. If you know it's illegal, it's your fault if you get caught.

go to illinois where ( i think ) the tint laws are more leniant...spelling sucks.. dont guote me, i aint said s***. I could be dead wrong.

Some experienced shop will do that due to the liability issue. One of the tint shop told me that they will not tint windows on passenger/driver side due to liability issue, and people still have them do it, why? Because they're professional tinter, being doing tinting since 1987 til now. Though, it really depend which states you're in, but I believe majority of the states are illegal.

protegejay is it in kenosha? i am planning to get tint done and i don't want to bother with a place that wont do what i want, keep us updated

Come to IL :D...I got mine 35% all the way around (except windshield). I live in Chicago as well (cops here are, can you say, a$$es sometimes) and don't plan on having any problems/run ins.

The shop I went to had 35% as the LIGHTEST. Everything else was darker.....sorry officer, I had no choice!!

**Off-Topic intrusion**
LOL Mr Jinx did you take the test from my sig? Or find it on your own. Gah you that crazy EG driver trying to run me off the road.
**return to normal topic**

If the shop has been in business that long they may not be welling to deal under the table, but it is worth a shot. Same deal I did with mine (35% all around) they just wrote the sale up as another car with legal tint.

And yes some states are really picky when it comes to tint. Though strange that some cars mostly SUVs have darker than state limits. But because they come like that it is legal. Hmpf

just remember one thing protejay5....you are about to shell out $265 for tint.....if you do manage to get them to do it under the table....are you also willing to have it all ripped off when you get busted for it? that is what they can and will have you....its happened to a memeber right here on this board...he spend big bucks to have his windows tinted HIS way...and it looked sweet....then got bushted and had to pay to have it all removed....

just consider the consequences of your actions....and I am sure you would rather use your money ONCE...and not just throw it out the window.

(stash)....just a word of caution.

i got 5% all around for $150, but i got 100 off sense my car was in the place anyways gitting fixed after i got hit.

You could always drive out of state to have it done, if that's convenient. For example, my car is registered in NJ but I go to school DC. Tinting the front windows in NJ past 50% (something ridiculous like that) is a big no-no. However I can get it done down here in MD/VA up to 35% around, as I don't want to crazy with no problems.

Just need to be careful when I return home. REMillers... you still never told me where you went.

Here in Ontario(Canada eh) the tint laws are 35% in the front passenger windows, and 20% in the rear, how ever, if you put really dark in the back and 20 to 35%in the front, it usaully looks legal and they don't bust you. I had 20% all around my P5 and no problems, now in my MSP I'm getting 35% mirror tint. The place i get tint done at said to say you were not sure of the tint laws, and they usually let you go, just don't tell them where you got it done at. The guy who said this drives a grandam with 5% all around, except the front. Really, it depends on the cop that pulls you over, usually, if you're a smooth talker, you can just say you didn't know the law, and that you'll take it to a shop to get it removed so it doesn't harm you're windows. This usually works 2-3 times before they make you take a razor to it. However, this is Canada, we have leniant tint laws, I know in the US they are generally quite harder on the tint law, but whatever...eh.

I just got mine tinted today. Paid $165 for 35 up front, and 20 on the back doors and back window. i also got some 50 or something on my sunroof. in texas the law is 35 on doors and whatever you want on the back, but you can usually get away with 20 on the back. the guys at my shop would do whatever the hell you wanted, though...one of the guys that works there has limo on the front and DOUBLE limo on the back of his truck.

hey where did you get this done at and how much? PM me if you could with this info, im thinkin i need tint soon

dosle: yes it is in kenosha. its called 'stay cool window tint'

i live right on the border of illinois, but the illinois laws are stricter. i dont think you can have any tint on the front in illinois.

sir nuke: thanks for the advice. this is why im having a hard time deciding. i could do it and never get caught. but i could also do it, and get caught on my way home from the tint shop and then it would be a waste of money.

does anyone have pics of 50% tint. what does that look like? i think i remember someone on here having 70% up front.

The price may be higher because it is summer. If you tried to get your windows tinted in the winter time it might be a lot cheaper. At least here in Vegas, that's how it goes.

In Oregon it's 35% all around but I wanted 20%. It wasn't too hard to get a note from my doctor and I'd recommend it. I didn't want to pay for a tint that was light. The strange part is that in Oregon SUV's can go as dark as they want.

protegejay, i know theres a few places in kenosha that you could ask at, one of them is built onto a Shell Gas station on Sheridan road, north of Kenosha Hospital on the right side of sheridan. theres another place i think its called New Image, take greenbay road north and go right on 60th st. should be on your right

matt

Just got mine tinted today... $115 for 20 % all over.
He showed me 15% but said it wasn't legal.

BUT I didn't tint the moonroof - it didn't even occur to me.
Is everyone in agreement that it should be done ?
darn !
