is tint that much of a problem..................

that is how they do...35 is illegal here but i got it anyway
slide the guy a few and he will probably work it out for you
the warranty is the only way to go !!

protegejay, i called the place i was talking about earlier, New Wave its called on 60th and Green Bay. the guy there said $210 and any % you want.

i plan on going in next week

matt

Keep looking around. And I'll tell you why. I got quoted at like $175 for my tint and he wojuldn't go lower than 35% I wanted 5%. I asked around with some people with dark tint and I found a shop that would do 5% and even warranty it and charge $120.00

i was interested in getting my windows tinted for the summer so i called around to get quotes. well, i found this shop near my house and they are supposed to be good. they've been in business for 20 years.

anyway, im talking to the guy and he tells me its $265. i tell him i want 35% all the way around and he tells me they can only tint according to state law which is no less than 35% on the rear and 50% on the sides. now i dont know what to do. i want to get it done at this shop, but i want 35%.

the price is a bit higher than the rest of the shops, but it comes with a nationwide lifetime warranty and that included the moonroof.

plus, this guy took the time (30 mins) to explain everything: how they would tint it and the differences between their tint jobs and other shops'. he was also explaining the state tint law and telling me about certain cops that only ticket people for tint. one cop in particular patrols one of the main streets here and pulls over everyone with tint. his goal is to write 17 tickets per day for tint adn he even has a light meter to see how much light can shine through your tint.

he said the only way to get 35% in the front is to get a note from my doctor saying that i sunburn easily or that i have sensitive eyes, which sounds a bit rediculous to me.

he was a nice guy and was very helpful, but i want it at 35% dammit! i dont know what to do.

Damn, Ive never heard of shops refusing to tint darker than the legal limit...

in fact both shops Ive been to advertise the prices for 35, 20, and 5% tint...as well as reflective which is also illegal...oh yeah, and they advertise front windshield tinting as well..

although, on the receipt it does say 35% no matter what you get :D

get an eye doctor to give you a prescription for darker tint than legal, then there's nothing the shops or cops can do to stop it. Doctor's orders! (Just remember to keep the prescription in your glove compartment with ur registration for when u get pulled over) (bird)

wonder how much the opthamologist would need to gimme a permission slip???(evil) since I really have 20/13 vision and no sensitivities whatsoever.

about $80... usually.

You can develop sensitivies pretty easily by staying mostly indoors and only going outside with sunglasses on. It doesn't take long before the sun will give you headaches if you drive around without sunglasses on. Then, it's time to visit the Dr, get an Rx, and brag to all ur friends that ur now an official cave-dwelling freak :)

so that $80 isnt necessarily a bribe then....just a standard fee for a visit and the sensitivity test???

i guess I could always fake it.(laugh)

Two things - remember that YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Cheap tint jobs will bubble and peel in 3 or so years. What you want is hybrid tint (that's what mine is). I payed $297, and I went with the most reputable place in town as opposed to the cheaper alternatives. Living in NM I am lucky (most lenient laws in the country for front window - 20%. But the city laws are 35%. I got 28%, which the shop said registers as 35% on those meters. The light meters are not all that sensitive, so you have some leeway. I say tint them legally, that would suck to have to get it ripped off. It may not even look that bad. I cannot even tell the difference between my front windows (28%) and my back windows (18%). So don't think that the lighter tint will look bad. Ask them to see it installed, I am sure that they have some cars at the shop that are tinted as dark as legally possible.

no it's not a bribe... 20$ to ur friend's dad who happens to be an optimologist would be a bribe...

dosle: yes it is in kenosha. its called 'stay cool window tint'

i live right on the border of illinois, but the illinois laws are stricter. i dont think you can have any tint on the front in illinois.

sir nuke: thanks for the advice. this is why im having a hard time deciding. i could do it and never get caught. but i could also do it, and get caught on my way home from the tint shop and then it would be a waste of money.

does anyone have pics of 50% tint. what does that look like? i think i remember someone on here having 70% up front.
It would be reeally light. On my mom's nissan altima we got 40% film (law here is 35% so with to be safe you gotta get 40% film to be legal) and it looks quite light. It is 3m metallic film so it has a nice reflective quality to it. Oh and she has 30% film on the rear glass. from some angles it barely looks like she has tint, and she has a black leather interior so it isn't the light colored interior making it look light. She also has 20% on the moonroof.

On my car I got 35% film and it looks a whole lot darker. 20% moonroof, 20% front strip, 20% rear window.

It's barely on the illegal side, so it should only be a problem if a cop is being a dick. If you leave the moonroof open while driving it'll make it look a lot lighter, then cops shouldn't have a problem. It's risky business, since 35% looks much darker than 40% I would figure they'd be able to tell pretty easily that you have 35% if the law is 50%
