Is this typical Mazda automatic behaviour?

I have a 2012 Mazda 5 auto. Had it about 5 years now. Has 152,000 kms/91,000 miles The automatic drives like no other I've driven. It's a bit hard to describe but I'll see if I can convey how it drives.
Engine starts and runs fine. Occasionally when coming to a stop the rpm will dip slightly and then return to normal. What I find perplexing is that the transmission feels 'soft'. My inlaws live in a condo complex where there's a pretty steep hill at the entrance. To go up the hill the engine revs but nothing really happens unless the rpm is above 2000-2500.
It honestly feels like a CVT or snow mobile. Previously I've owned a 2005 Golf with 6 speed DSG auto and VW Passatt with the same trans. Both were amazing auto trans, very crisp and direct feeling. My F150 has a very direct feeling auto trans.
I plugged in my OBD reader and there were no codes.
I had the transmission flushed and refilled about 15,000 kms ago.
Is this just normal Mazda behaviour?

Sounds like worth cleaning the MAF (mass airflow sensor). You can do it easy, with a screwdriver and a spray can of MAF cleaner. YouTube has clips for how-to.

Ran to the auto parts store over lunch. Picked up some MAF cleaner.
Before:

After:

Also put in a new air filter.
Took it around the block afterwards.
Massive difference in drivability. Thanks so much for the tip @dlarkin_dc
