Next time, call the STATE cops. Seriously. In the area where I grew up (central NY) the local cops, country sheriff and the state cops HATED each other. There were a couple incidents where state cops pulled over local cop cars and ticketed them for speeding!
In the town where I live now we have a state police barracks, and the local cops speed all over the place and run lights and stop signs, EXCEPT when they are near the state police. I don't think there is much if any professional courtesy between local, county and state police.

I love how everyone bitches about what cops do or don't do until they need them...
Guys, police officers are just normal people trying to do a job. There's NO need to make their life any harder than you'd want yours. Granted, there are a lot of bad things about some officers, however, most are just working to get paid. That's it. Cops aren't "made" any differently than you are. They normally have families or loved ones just like yourself. They're not "Robocop" clones, they're *NORMAL* people.
It really pisses me off when people b**** about cops. It's like someone bitching about the Army. Soldiers go out there and give their life so you people can sit here and freely type on a forum, yet, everyone seems to love to talk s*** about their behavior and what they did wrong. Cops are the same way but they don't go for 6months at a time, they do it every day of their lives.
Seriously, grow up. If all you can do is b**** about what cops do *wrong*, then you need a life. If you think you can do so much better, join the Police Academy and go at it. I personally don't think that anyone ignorant enough to talk s*** about police officers would have the balls to do it every day of their lives.
If I hadn't gotten in to drugs a few years ago, I would be a cop now. However, now I have to wait a few years before any departments hire me. Does that make me any different than any of you? I think not. Quit bitching about the people who go out there every day and try to protect us.
Try this... Even if you don't want to.. Next time you feel like bitching needlessly about what a cop does that you don't like, go ride out with the police department. Many departments allow "good citizens" to ride shotgun with an officer through his/her shift so you get an idea of what they do. Officers don't do the s*** you see on "Cops" every day. I guarantee you that if you ride out at least once with a police officer, you'll change your outlook on them pretty damn quickly.
If you're not a "good citizen" and can't ride out then I can see why you think cops are so bad... It's because they put your dumb ass in jail or give you tickets every weekend for smashin gas everywhere you go and pull 130 down the highways to show off.

T3ase is dead on here, I'm a police dispatcher where I live so I get to spend 12 hours a day with these guys. Everyone should try to do a civilian ride along. It will defintely change the way you see things. Cops are normal everyday men and women who put theselves in the middle of very abnormal situations. There might have been another call near where the officer was that other officers had already responded to. Maybe those officers weren't listening to their radio when the dispatcher called them for a routine safety check. The officer you saw might have been close by and when the other officers didn't answer he assumed the worst as they are all trained to do. He flipped on his lights and went to help the other officers. As soon as he ceared the intersection the other officers keyed up and said they were 10-4 so he just goes back to driving around like he was before you saw him. It could have been any one of amillion scenarios, legal or illegal. Just remember that their job requires them to do things that civilians aren't allowed to do. Someday you may wish the officer had gotten there just a little quicker, especially if it is life threatening.
I know cops, grew up with a couple, have 2 in my family, and have ridden in cop cars (both front and back). I understand the day-to-day of what they do, and I have a lot of respect for those people that are out there to serve and protect their community.
Being a cop is a tough job, yes. And they are just normal people, like everyone else. However, being a cop doesn't give someone the right to just act however they want and to break the laws they are sworn to protect. It doesn't make it OK to just look the other way when cops are doing something illegal.

Seriously guys.. don't turn it around to make it sound like I hate cops, and don't apprieciate the risk they put themselves into just to protect us. I just don't agree that they can break laws for no reason. Don't you guys get sick of getting followed by cops for no reason? Tailgated by them? Cops passing by and making a u-turn just to follow you? Hell.. I've even been pulled over for parking in my driveway. If they're just doing their job, then they should at least do their job correctly.
The example being used in this thread is a cop busting a light with overheads on. There are *MANY* calls that require an officer to "step it up" a bit more than casual driving speed. Just because he doesn't go full out lights & siren does NOT mean there wasn't something going on. You do not know the circumstances.JunkPunch said:

You may not have been around when this happened but I've had cops draw their guns while I was in my driveway working on my car one night. I work to build the cruisers used by the officers, so my work is helping to protect people (i really dont, just making a point). Does that mean I get to run through red lights because I want to get home 2 min quicker too? What about people who build their firearms? Physicians who take care of them? people like t3ase are essentially saying that it's OK for a cop to fracture a law or two because (s)he's more valuable to society... well then what about those people who support the cops? aren't they technically even more valuable then?
I agree with xrated and junkpunch... a law exists for the protection of others. and there are laws for cops as to when they can break certain other laws. but just because they have the power to do so, doesn't mean they should abuse it..

I see both sides.. If any of us were cops.. we'd take a couple red lights.. I save give them that thrill if it makes them happy.
But on the other end.. I know of a government law enforcement agent that was pulled over by a city police officer for not coming to a complete stop at at stop sign ON HIS BICYCLE.

The thing that pisses me off..is that they are supposed to be enforcing the law..well how can they do that when they themsleves are setting a bad example and braking laws..
Many good points have been put into perspective that officers have many duties..and have to drive fast..and cut redlights...

I think traffic laws are out there moreso to protect you from morons and people who don't know the abilities of their cars in many situations. When it comes to police officers, it just seems they have the feeling that they can set their own limits to how they want to drive, just because they have been professionally trained to drive, and taught exactly how to react in many tough situations. This, I agree with.
If everyone went autocrossing for one year, I'm sure the goverment wouldn't be so set on exact speed limitations, but you know what, a lot of people can't think quickly in scary situations, or just aren't smart enough to take care of their car, or know the car as well as police do. I don't mind seing a cop speeding, because I know he can handle himself, and really if I was a cop, the best way to catch speeders is to come up behind them, and you can't do that unless you are speeding as well. It's rare a speeder just blows by a cop. Anyways, I'm sure the people I want to get this across too understand. The rest of you, um, go autocross.

There are various ways that are exceptable to respond to a call.
For my department, there is code 9. Basically, you drive about the speed limit, and use your lights if necessary to get to call fast, but not an emergency response.
Code 10 is an emergency response where you drive with lights and siren the entire way.
Now, what you do is document the time and the place, car number if possible. Call up the jurisdiction it happened in and ask to speak with a supervisor. File the complaint.
Most departments will look up the time and the calls and see if the response or the way the officer was driving was appropriate. If not, the officer will get reprimanded for his driving.
So, yes, running a light can acceptable in certain situations. You don't have a scanner in your car, do you? How do you know what's going on?

It depends on the department or area you work...
For mine and some other locals, code 1 or code 2 means meet or call me...
Code 3 is whatever, code 4 all is well code 5 wanted person/item...
And code 9 and 10 are what I stated above.
Code 12 is officer needs help yesterday!

Yes, it definitely is different for every area..but all of NJ (where the original poster lives) is basically that way.
