Is there any difference between the 2004-05 and 2006+ 2.3L engine?

I have to replace my Mazda 3 2.3L engine, and they are sold as 2004-2005 models or 2006-2009. What are the differences? I don't believe there are any changes--but will a 2006 engine work with my 2004 ECU?

Also, I have the 5spd MTX. I am looking to get either an automatic or manual trans, model (autos are much easier to find). Will I have trouble putting my MTX on an engine from an ATX car?

I have no idea why Mazda would change the engines. The only things that might be different would be sensors, but I doubt that even. I would think that an engine swap would be no problem. Good luck!

I have the same question. My 2004 2.3L blown and I found a 2.3L from a 2008 Mazda 3. I see that the timing cover must be swaped due to the difference in crank position sensor holes and I heard about the intake cam too.
Did you end up doing theswap? how it is working?

Thanks

I have not done the swap yet, I am still researching if I will be able to use a 2006+ 2.3L instead. The 2006+ engines are so much easier to find and usually less expensive...

I really need a definitive answer. I am aware that the intake cam ends are different between the years. Will this cause a problem with my 2004 ECU?

the basic motor itself will swap without any issue. you just might have to swap some sensors, and the crank pulley as they did change. as well as the ignition set up and cams. but all that can be swapped very easily to the new motor.
