My MSP started squeaking a few weeks back when the engine is cold. As i drive the squeak goes away, so I bought new belts to replace the old ones. Is there a how to somewhere on replacing the belts in the MSP? Or even a generic belt replacement How-To that someone can point me to? Never attempted to replace them before. Thanks.

Help!

Alright... went to change my belts and was following the instructions on the link provided. I started with the screw that I could reach first. As it was made clear in the instructions I started tightening the bolt down to loosen it, But the belt seemed to be getting tighter!!! so I went the other way to loosen... but now screw is backing out but nothing is moving.... PLEASE HELP!!!!

you need to loosen the nut on the other side of that loop in the pic you just posted, if you already did that, then you need to loosen the pivot bolt at the very top of the power steering bracket, again, I say LOOSEN, do not remove the bolts or nuts all the way, just loosen

and when loosening that bracket, left loosens the belt, right tightens

Thanks! Got it!

UPDATE: Got the belts replaced, NO MORE SQUEAK!! Think I may post a How-To with some pics in the near future. The one in the link helped a lot, but I did have some difficulty following it.

Still getting a bit of a squeak every now and then. Not sure if I have the belts tight enough. Is there a way to tell by feel? Should there be a little give in the belts, or should they be tight with no give? If there is no way to do it by feel, can anyone provide me with the correct tension that I can try to get measured at AutoZone (or similar). I do not have a tension gauge.

usually when u put new belts in make them tight with just a lil give, because they stretch, dnt beat on the car after replacing them. let them stretch then tighten them again, then problem gone. SCORE!

Yes. Thats what I did. Put them on, with just a little give, let them run for about 5 min, tighten them a lil more. Then about 2 days later, when I started the car, got an AWFUL squeal, so I tightened them down a little more. Then this morning when I started the car, again AWFUL squeal, guess ill check them later and see if I can tighten them a bit more. Just drives me crazy, cause sounds like a bunch of cats are having a fight to the death in my engine when it happens. (fight)

were any of ur pulleys dirty? try brake clean. dnt use any lube it only causes more problems

I will have a look, but I am pretty sure that the were clean. I have not notices the squeak that much anymore. Only every now and then when I am driving. And its notwhere near as bad as before. Maybe just need to tweak it a lil bit more to get it right.

been tweaking my belts every now and then, did it again tonight. They sound much better, However, when I press on the gas, I am still getting a little squeak in low RPMs. Could this be coming from something else? Its everytime I start to drive, once I get up more in the RPMs it either goes away or I cant hear it over the engine.
