Is my baby gone?

Hey all. My beautiful car was a victim of a car going through a red light and slamming into me. Does it look totaled? Anyone with experience with similar damage?

I know the damage is extensive and I am actually hoping it is totaled so that I can avoid having a car with near total loss damage. The repair shop it is currently at is telling me it’s a total loss, but nothing is official until the insurance adjuster says so. They are scheduled to look at it on Monday. I’m anxious and would like some opinions while I wait.

I have a tremendous amount of warnings on my Mazda app (engine malfunction, headlight system malfunction, high beam control system disabled, parking break malfunction, emergency lane keeping disabled, front radar sensor malfunction, iACTIVSENSE system malfunction, SBS and FOW systems disabled)

it’s a 2023 Carbon Edition with 27k miles.

iI think it's not totaled but, depends on the knowledge of the adjuster. I think not because it is a high dollar vehicle but that's my uneducated guess after have a similar issue.

Thats a tuff call
Insurance companies dont get into totaling a vehicle unless there’s frame damage or engine. Your codes maybe due to fuse box damage.

Had almost the exact same thing happen to our 2019 about 2 years ago. Maybe a bit less damage than yours, but it cost us just under $8000 (on the other guy's insurance). Replaced hood, fender, under hood panel(s), bumper, grill, emblems, etc. + some bodywork on the door and paint obviously. I don't think the light was replaced on ours though, and yours obviously needs to be. We waited for weeks for an OEM hood, but they were seriously backordered, so had to settle for a non-OEM one, but it seems to be fine.

Had a Subaru take more damage than that, some years ago, to the front quarter. And they didn't total it. Today, that damage would have exceeded the value of that car at that time.

But with today's parts and shop prices, it's very likely to cost a good hunk of change to fix your CX-5. Though it is a 2023, so not exactly inexpensive. If the frame's deemed "straight" and there's little more than the front quarter's structure and surrounding panels/lights/sensors, then it might not get totaled.

Am not an adjuster, but if I were to guess then it looks to me as though that's damage costing less than half the value of a '23. But it'll depend what they find, of course; and you know that digging generally finds more and more.

Did any airbags engage? That along with damage is a good indicator if it will be totalled or repaired.

When my '20 CX-5 was totalled in the spring of 2022 at only 21,000km (13,000 miles), my adjuster initially decided that it could be repaired (damage limited to front end and air bag deployed) due to the car still being worth more than the repair cost. However, the next day they decided to write it off, which was probably for the better. It does not take much to write off a modern car these days.

You would think they make the judgement solely on the dollar amounts, but I had an experience when they paid almost twice what the car was worth for the repair.

Glad you were alright. And luckily it was hit in front of the wheel.

I have a 19 year old truck that is worth more to me than the insurance value. I've become THAT old man who slowly enters and intersection. I have so much sweat equity in that old truck I would be sad if it was in an crash. SO the habit of slowly entering an intersection transferred to the Mazda. Folks are so distracted driving these days. We all could name a dozen or so examples....

There is a connector to the ECU in the area it was hit. I would think most of the codes are from harness damage. I had this connector off when fitting a CAI into the fender. I got a bunch of codes when I started up. They all cleared after reconnecting the connector.

I'm surprised no air bag was deployed.

I've poked around our CX 5. It's tight and hard to work on. A shop should be able to repair. I'd discuss how they repair or replace damaged engine harness. IF repair, what is the procedure. There is repair and then repaired. It could be a source of problems down the road. I'd insist the order a new harness.....

GL!!
