i removed the shifter console cover and attached a strong magnet in the gap on the upper left (red circle)

to prevent scratches on that surface i put on a clear display protective film. this also works as an anti-skid-mat for the cellphone

so just leave it there for the ride (drive)

you sure that the magnet is not going to mess with the micro-chips?
becarful not to scramble your SIM card.

no, it doesnt. there are hundreds of magnetic holders for cellphones on the market and i am using them for years.

sim cards and memory cards have no magnetic memory such as hard disks in a computer.

how can i test to see if this would mess up my cell phone? really kick as idea

i checked. seems to be ok.
i ripped apart a HDD and rubbed the super magnets on my phone... no effect!

there's only one phone that i know that has a hard disk drive like a computer. its the samsung SGH-i300. it has 3GB for music storage and was produced a few years ago when micro-SD didnt exist or were too expensive. nowadays you dont have to worry.

that is just such a kick ass idea......did you get that from the holders???

i give you a 8.5 for the idea

here is an example what you can buy in stores:

i teared one of these apart and used the magnet. you can attach that piece of metal thin sheet on your cellphone if needed. the razr doesnt need that, it has some metal parts inside.

how strong are your magnets. im thinking about trying this with some harddrive magnets that i ripped out. there small, but pretty strong.

Dude, you should get this idea patented and market it to the car manufacturers. I bet a LOT of people would appreciate something like this as standard equipment on a new car.

The magnets on the HDD, are the strongest. Almost like the 'earth magnets' you see at stores like 'Princess auto'. And if you get a bigger scsi hdd to dissect,, the magnets there are so strong, it's a challenge to separate them.

I use layers of magnets to adjust the angle of my tomtom gps.
The cell phone is in my pocket.. as I use the hands-free bluetooth feature of the gps.

I bought a new case for my new Samsung Eternity phone because I wasn't real happy with the case it came with. The new case has the magnetic clasp. Well using the new case my phone will barely hold a charge for two days, previously I was getting around 6 days from it. Seems crazy, but I switched back to my old case after recharging the phone and the standby time went back up to around 6 days. switched back to the new case and it fell way off again. Doesn't make sense to me, but the only difference I can figure between the two is the magnetic clasp.

That's neat. Better than what I did... which was too stick a belt clip cell phone holder with the belt clip removed on that same area as your magnet.

GPS Magnets

Great idea hiding the magnets. I need to do the same in my application.

I've been using magnets for my 'gps' holder.

Skyhawk,

how did you do your installation? With glue? Or was the magnet sticky on one side? Cause I have the same problem! I would like my GPS to hang at the same place as yours, but since the wire is not flush with the case, I was wondering how I could get the extra spacing needed... Where did you get these magnets? And I presume that GPS are like Cell phones? Meaning that they are not affected by magnets? Am I correct?
