Installing Unichip w/out Boost Controller

I recently purchased a Unichip from ProtegeGarage.

I'm aware that the Unichip comes with a boost controller, but that it's rather sub-par. I'd prefer to go out and pick up something along the lines of a GReddy Profec-B, but money is rather short.

Seeing as power isn't my main priority (stability and reliability is key), I'd rather just have the Unichip clean up the bad ECU, and leave the boost be.

Is this a viable option? Simply not install the included boost controller?

Thanks.

Drew.

When I had the unichip, I never used the boost controller. You dont have to use a boost controller at all.

I would suggest getting the unichip tuned for your mods though (with or without a boost controller)

yeah, the car ran fine without the boost controller. i was running just the Unichip for several months before deciding to put it in.

i ran mine without the EBC for quite awhile fine too...although once i put it in and set it on 'stock' boost, it usually spikes to ~9-10psi, then drops to a steady 6.5-7psi (stock). So...it's a nice little spike real fast, and not dangerous...it's easy to install too.

Eh, I'll probably just wait for the cash for a Greddy unit. I just don't trust the Unichip EBC.

And I guess I don't feel I need it.

I used the UC boost controller once and took it right out. Boost went up to 15psi, I really wasn't paying much attention until the tires started to burn out. I was in 3rd gear when it happened and my car never did that! All I've heard were bad things about it.

how much do you think it would cost to get unichip tuned?

JDM Sam down here in Texas charges a couple hundred (?) for a custom tune. PM him for a bit more info. There other guys around the country that are familiar enough with the unit to tune.

Same. No use in putting subpar parts on a great car.

Why dont you just try the bc? Im using it now. It spikes to 14 then settles at 10. It took me a few tries to get the nerve to keep the throttle down long enough to how how it would boost.
The mid range spike makes the car much faster then using a bc that does not spike. Ive tried others and I think im going to keep the unichip bc in.
Have you tried to Greddy unit before? I had it and found it to be a pain to get dialed it.

i have been told by many shops that are highly looked at unichip tuners (including tony himself from unichip) and they have all told me that the boost solenoid for the unichip ebc is a very generic part and is used by MANY other manufacturers including HKS and Greddy with there ebcs... the only difference is the tune pretty much. you get it tuned and all worked out and it doesnt spike.

everyone wastes their money and goes out to buy a different one but still uses the same solenoid.

i was going to buy the profec 2 but was convinced not to when he showed me the two solenoids... the only thing that still sucks about the unichip bc is that it isnt able to be tuned on the fly... you can only have two preset amounts and thats it unless you wanna get another tune job...

just thought i would let you know before you spend over 300 bucks you dont need to spend
