I don't think it'd be that expensive to plug in an ambient sensor to the car's CPU. I've read that the trick works on other Mazda models, and the sensor is only $60 from your local parts department. I'm curious if the same applies to the CX-7, and if anyone has discovered where the sensor would plug in.
Now installing the auto climate control might be expensive, since those boxes usually cost quite a bit. But all I care about is having something display in that horrible blank spot on the radio display. Even if it is a "no-duh" display of my manual climate control settings or the outside temp.
