Injen installed & OOPS........

Installed my black Injen CAI tonight at work (very slow). Have to say I'm happy with the slight performance benefits, as the 5 does seem to be a bit quicker. Also loving the sound. One small problem though.....I broke the lower fitting off of the purge valve! Am I going to burst into flames! Suffer an eternity in Hell? Destroy my overwhelmingly powerful otherwise stock engine? The only thing I noticed was that at stops and while parked the idle was a tiny bit rough. Would dip every now and then. While driving it was fine--not rough or hesitant. How long can I get away with this and how much is a replacement? Also, where did *you* mount your purge valve? Thanks for any input. (cheers)

the purge valve on top of the factory air inlet right off of the throttle body, with the two hoses coming out of it. It mounts to a metal bracket sticking straight up...........

I have seen people zip tie the purge solenoid to their strut bar. In this case, if you do not have one look for a safe place to zip tie it to. I made sure mine was still straight up and down. I know AEM comes with a place to mount the purge, but Injen does not

SidPro,

Hey I did the same thing when I installed the Injen CAI on my MP3! Pissed me off something fierce! I called all over town to find a replacement part and the ONLY place that had one was the dealer! This is a $90+ part! I broke the bottom flange off mine but managed to repair it quite well. My car would not even idle without stalling until I fixed this.

I took the part off completly and removed all the hoses. I used a small amount of superglue to hold the flange in place. (careful not to get any glue in the hole! Once the superglue dried I used zip ties to add strength to the elbow, one in either direction of the 90 deg bend. Then I used a good amount of expoxy to cover the ties and ensure that the entire assembly was capable of holding a vacuum.

This has more than worked for me as I needed a quick fix sincde I was heading out of town when the break occured. I have had no problems with the fix since.

Hope that helps.

Hey...... where do you connect the hose coming off the purge control valve????

I'm just driving with it off right now... is this even OK? All I notice is that when I push the throttle hard, there is a little hiss for a second. I also had the same idle prob... but I'm trying to reset my ecu right now.

Don't worry, I was in the same boat when I installed mine. I broke mine when I tried to take that damn bolt off. Anyway, I would suggest you get a new one from your local dealer (if you're lucky, they might have it in stock). Meanwhile, I talked to a tech at my local dealership, and he said purge valve have to do with smog stuff, so if you broke it or anything happend to it..you'll get CEL from time to time.

thanks but no... I didn't brake it off, the hose is just hanging loose. Where does the hose connect to?

Laser, the hose connects to a small diameter pipe coming out behind the throttle body.

B@wlz, that's what I'm considering doing (superglue). The way mine broke, I don't think it'll be too hard. Just the nozzle itself broke off.

Jliao, did the tech say if it would cause any problems while drivin? It's been off since last night, and I just got a CEL tonight, and I've driven about 40mi.

Thanks. I think I found the spot.... There was a little nipple behind the throttle body like you said, so I assume that's where it went..... Does anyone know what that purge control valve purges? I also reset my ecu.... so everything should be fine now. Too late for a test drive tonight, so I'll wait and see tommorow. Thanks sidpro!

He didn't specifially say if it'll cause any problem. He just simply told me that he would highly recommend to get that replace if it's broken.

Laser, no problemo! However, I don't know exactly what it purges. If you look at the diagram on the underside of your hood, it should tell you.

JLiao, at some point I will replace it. Prolly in a week or two. Cash is a bit tight (more than likely 'cause of the CAI and cat back!!). As long as it continues to run ok...........

I'm guessing it should be "ok" to run for several weeks as long as you "attempt" in sealing it up. I suppose just try to seal it with superglue or even silicon gun, then wrap it with a tape.

Seal it as in, re-attach it to where it came off? I noticed that if you put a finger over the open end of the hose while the car is running, it wants to stall..........

That statement really sound like if you can have any air leaking out of the hose and the purge valve, then the car will stall. My situation was that I cracked the bottom part, the part where you stick it into the hose. So, if my dealer didn't have the purge valve in stock, my other way was to get superglue and seal that crack, and insert it back into the hose for temporary usage. In your situation, I'm not exactly sure how your purge is damaged, but I would try and seal whatever has opening for air coming in/out, and stick it back into the hose (Might have to be very careful).

Basically, it sounds like mine broke the same way as yous, Jliao. Just the hose fitting came off, not the lower part of the the valve itself. I'll try to fix it until I can get one from the dealer. Damn, $90.00?!?!?!? Gettin' Dave B. rings, antenna, and Gujustud oil cap for less than that........(cheers)

I just did my install this morning and....

I just got back from the garage after I installed my INJEN CAI and here are some pics. (I reduced the image sizes for you dial-up folks) I included pictures of the purge valve that everyone is talking about...

Also, I have decided to manufacture a better mount for the Coolant tank. Instead of hanging it off the radiator, I am going to create a hanger bracket from the factory piece that will mount directly to the engine compartment. I'll have pictures of it and it's install so everyone will understand what I'm talking about. I think you will like what it will do and I can duplicate the part for those that want one.

I put a rubber gasket around the opening to prevent metal-to-metal contact

Very nice, but........I know what the purge control valve is, and I know I need it. I was just wondering if there are any consequences for driving with the lower nozzle broken off. Apparently, not really, other than a CEL. I'm sure over time, there may be. But I'll replace it soon enough. Now, if you could come up with a repair kit (that isn't $90.......)
