If you were to spend under 400 on a HU, what would you get...

I'd get one of those really good Sonys they sell at Wal-Mart, you know the ones.. They still have tape players on them.

nice there is a reserve, what does it normally end up going for? i was thinking with my audio setup an alpine hu anyhow, with some really nice alpine speakers to replace all the speakers in the car, then move onto 2 amps and subs. before i had a RF 160a2 running 3 sets of speakers (i didnt care about fading, etc) and it sounded awesome with my 2 RF xlc 12s...i might go something like that route in the future

hehe!

I have that Alpine HU (I paid $410 on eBay) and a Rockford 700s running 2 RF HE12s!

Great minds think alike. ;)

Alpine headunits are awesome.

I had an Alpine HU in my protege5 before I traded it in for the Mazdaspeed and it was kick ass. You can't go wrong with Alpine. I have the top of the line kenwood now and it's also a great headunit but the logic and the way the Alpine's work is just better.

I would check out Arc Audio speakers if you have a shop that carries them near you, I have been really impressed with mine.

never heard of arc...i was also considering infinity speakers as well.

Arc Audio is a smaller brand, but there crossovers are made by Rainbow (high end german manufcaturer) They are some of the best sounding components I have ever heard. They are very smooth and not harsh like MB Quarts, which is a good thing if you use the factory mounting locations for the seperates in the protege.

These are the ones I have: http://www.arcaudio.com/arc/navigation/acs265prodp.htm

But in the end with speakers it all comes down to your personal taste and what you like, so most important of all, listen using music you are familiar with, on a set-up that is going to be similar to what is going in your car.

oh i value your opinion and have it bookmarked, i just wanted some other opinions as well

if you are going to have amps and dont need to power the speakers off the deck, then you can get the alpine 7995. Crutchfield has it for 299 shipped. awesome HU and for the price you can not beat it. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-yZL5dKmAwAX/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?i=500CDA7995 Alpine is getting rid of that model so it is on clearance. My buddy has one itis nice. And you can not go wrong with alpine they are the best.

If you want to power some speakers off the deck then I would reccommend the JVC stuff. I have had mine for a long time. I have had it in 4 different cars and let my friend borrow it (it has been around like a record if you konw what i mean). I have not had any problems with it and it looks great with the silver plate that surronds the stereo and controls.

I have the kd-sh99 but the new models are better they have more options. If you get the top model it will have mp3 playback, 4V preouts, prob a 7band eq. nice stuff.

Here is the link to JVC you can check out the different ones and they list retail price which you can prob do better than that. http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?productId=PRD3201100

Good luck

Oh yeah.. I am a big fan of the turn knob volume. I liek it way better than the push button. The Alpine and JVC both have that. Most of the HU that have PB I see the buttons get wore out.

lots of good info, im going to read what you linked me to, but before i go to do that, i wanted to say that at first im going to run off the deck, then maybe a few months down the line, prolly get the amp.

I would also recommend the ALpine one (7995) at crutchfield. Or go with an Eclipse.

parks853 is right. The 7995 is an awesome deck. That's the one I had in my protege5. Amazing head unit great price. Since you were saving money on the deck you could check out avionexx amps, I hear very good things about them, they are a great price.
