If someone has your IP number...

keep your machine up to date with the latest patches and if you have a router, block all unneeded ports.

and the answer is yes... plus they can remote kill it too.
as long as you have your router/gateway configured correctly you should be ok.
Even with every roadblock known there are people still out there that can figure out how to get around it. It sucks.

Depends on the person, but anyone with half a brain could. Even if you have a firewall doesn't mean you are invincible. There are plenty of hacks for linksys, netgear, etc. that allow the person to take control over the hardware. Also, don't even get me started on personal firewalls like blackice and the like. I do computer network security for a living and even if you are up to date on patches doesn't mean you aren't vulnerable. It's still good advice to keep up to date on patches and block all uneeded ports, but again isn't the end-all/be-all.

The biggest thing you should worry about is open network ports. FTP, http, email, etc all use a different "port" on your ip address to talk with your computer. Novice hackers can find and connect via open ports and mess around with your stuff. Use a router or firewall to close ports you're not using, and you should be fine.

Expert hackers can get around firewalls, passwords, etc. If they want your stuff, they'll get it. The question is, what do you want on your computer that an expert hacker would spend his time working on?

Another easy way to prevent hacking... turn off your computer when you're gone, or disconnect the internet cable. Since most people use DHCP servers at home now, you can be up and running within seconds of plugging in a network cable.

I have a high speed caple modem and a wireless router. And a basic Mac IBook. I know there is a firewall in there from the Cable people, all I worry about on my computer is some X-rated photos. But if someone on line say in this forum got my IP I was just worried that they could get into my computer and **** things up.

How about this... I give you my IP address, I'll tell you all my open ports and tell you i have XP with SP1(no other updates)... I wanan see you get into my computer.... If you can't does that mean you only got a quarter of a brain....

P.S. If your computer crashes, don't look at me... (evil)

wireless networks can be a real security problem! people can try and access your system, if it's not protected properly from a van down the street. i just saw a demo were these two young WPI grads broke into a mock company's system and within 25 mins had gained aceess to some real sensitve information.

CEEJ if you are running OS X you are stright... I've never seen an OS X computer get hacked. I went to a pretty smart school so i think u good to go.. I mean u do have to prevent stuff too.. Stuff like don't click yes when that pop up comes up asking you if u want to install(unless its big companies like Macromedia, apple, ... ) also don't download any thing taht can be installed on ur computer... and use webmail... if it has an attachemnt let the server scan it first before download.

oh ya wireless network... encript your network with at least 64 bit encription.. that will take (8 days to crack) 128 bit = (4 month to crack.)

Just those thing will usually keep you safe.

I am not worried about anyone getting in thru the wireless as I live at the end of a dead end and I know the folks around me, hell they can take my wireless for free if they want too, I get it for free. Anyway, I was just worried about people from this board as I seem to have a moderator who hates me, he could get my IP and give it to someone (NOT trying to start drama here, just get some facts). Yes I have the new version of Mac system software.

Another suggestion for WLANs is to change the RF channel to anything other than the default. Alot of people leave their 802.11b/g AP on the default ch6; with the bandwidth overlap, 1, 6, & 12 are the suggested channels to use to aid in system co-exsistence... if you only have 1 AP, I say use 3 or 8 or 10 or something like that. JAT...

for your wireless ... i would add a MAC list also, to help make sure your wireless card is the only one that has access. also, don't broadcast your SSID, that might stop ppl from knowing you even have a wireless network.

As for your ip ... i know people who can go around a CheckPoint or Sonicwall firewall pretty easily, so i guess if he knows a pro, there aint much you can do. Basic things like a router is always good and if i had to suggest a firewall ... i'd say use Kerio. Blackice seems to be pretty popular, even though it's not a real firewall. And zonealarm is a joke too =\ I'm not saying Kerio is perfect, but so far, it's the best one i've tested. \

good luck

1 last thing i did forgot to mention... if you have a firewall on ur router some of them allow you to say accept connection only if i make the first contact... That means no http, ftp, dns, proxy.... servers but it keeps u very safe.

Why are people so paranoid about hackers getting into their computers? Seriously if you have information that so important, then dont put it on your computer? Taxes? DO IT ON PAPER! Bank Accounts? DO IT OVER THE PHONE! Geez, I could care less if anyone breaks into my computer, s*** take whatever you want, I dont care, its not like I have anything important on there. But in case someone does and they are on this board, can you find out why my computer keeps crashing every day? Its a hardware problem but I cant seem to fix it thanks!

That's true, there's alot of paranoia out there regarding w/l networks. If someone wants badly enough to get into your computer, they'll figure out a way around whatever security you have in place.

All you can do in the meantime, it setup whatever security makes you feel comfortable and then stop worrying about it. If you're still worried after that, then simply never turn on your computer...that'll certainly keep the hackers out! ;)

Besides, hackers like a challenge...it's bragging rights. What good is bragging about hacking through a $50 Linksys router when there's banks and c/c companies to be hacked...

This is way back, but I just saw it now and decided to post because you sir, are a moron. Oh no, please don't crash my computer you elite hacker, you.

First, just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean they don't get hacked. There are plenty of vulnerabilities for OS-X, do some research. What smart school did you go to? You need to go back and learn to spell and learn about *encryption*. You do know there is more than one kind, and where the hell did you get your numbers on the length of time it takes to crack a "64 bit encription" ? What type of encryption?
