I took my exhaust off...

some guys have melted s*** from running open DP for extended period of time.... lol fail

ive done this for a DAY I loved the sound actualy i started it up in the middle of my changing my exhaust out. it sounded great would love an electronic cutout some days. other then the discoleration of the underside of your car. potiential melting of parts in that area. the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning. it will tear up your heat shild in area if one at that evit point. this is an awsome plan on a DD. cant imagin anything good on extended idles or rush hour. some reason i see flames...

wont get into 90+ MPH in a 40 zone

Think of all the Mustangs and Camaro's and Nova's with "dumps" that are typically done in the home garage. They scrape on everything making sparks and belch smelly exhaust under the car. Yeah it adds power and killer bitchin sound but look at it.

You'll get tired of the exhaust fumes before long and fix it. That's my guess.

Wurf, perhaps. And if so, no big deal. Like I said before, this is a very easble "fix" if I tire of it.

It just seems like everyone is giving very valid reasons for concern, and you're being pretty nonchalant about it. I take it either you don't drive the car a lot, or don't drive far maybe?

A few things.

I drive about 20-30 miles for school 3 days a week. I don't drive far, but I do drive a lot. There are valid concerns and I've noted the advice. I keep a fire extinguisher in the trunk in the event of a fire and I'll keep an eye on the under neath to watch for signs of damage. But I've done the reasearch and have talked to other people who have actually done this, and they put most of the concerns to rest.

I already said I appreciated everyone's input. I'm not one of those people that can't take criticism and get all pissy. I'll address any questions directed at me.

Well that is good that you listen. My only concern for you would be the cost of getting it placed back on and then a weld that will someday weakin and rust premature aside from the cost that you already said was your motivation for the unecesary "mod" (if you want to call it that) of not getting an actual exhaust or having it done right in the first place will be the same deterent for not getting it fixed when you need to, lack of $$...

I should also state that this is temporary. I don't plan on keeping my car like this forever. This is just a cheap temporary solution for a louder car until I can afford a legit exhaust system. In all honesty, I'll probably put the exhaust back on after the Import Alliance meet in Nashville in July.

Also, sorry for my inability to quote. Work allows this website, but none of the quote buttons come up. Weird, I dunno.

You`re serious? This wasn`t a joke? I figured this was like Swampass`s hood leds thread. I figured you cut off the exhaust, took a picture, went for a drive, and came back and put your real exhaust on.
As has been pointed out, this is just wrong for so many reasons that it almost defies description.
That fire extinguisher, if you ever need it, you`ll wish it was a lot closer than the back of the car.

The fire will be between the OP and the extinguisher!

The comparison to the electric cut out crowd was hilarious. At least they have a choice and can save their "intimidation" for selective use.

NA or supercharged highly modded V8's with long tube headers can make a good bit more power with open collectors. Cars like ours with the exhaust manifold "collector" being the turbo exhaust side, gain virtually nothing from an open exhaust, if the system flows well to begin with, as ours does.

I used to have a pretty healthy small block MOPAR muscle car -- light A body coupe -- 3100 lbs that I raced on the strip. I did have mechanical cutouts operated by cable from the dash. I found their only legitimate (and safe) street use was to pull up along side one of those guys with his 120 decibel multi-subwoofer sound system playing obnoxious music, projecting his personal musical taste on the surrounding world at stop lights.

I'd just pull along side, and if there were no innocent bystanders, open up the cutouts and raise the engine up to about 6500 rpm and hold. It was great sport. But away from the strip, served no good use.

first off, MT, you know i'm not trying to be a dick or anything, but please put some sort of pipe out to the side, or out the back... dangerous from fire, which is a VERY REAL danger on a turbo car, you might be more concerned if you could see the foot of fire coming out of the pipe when you downshift, etc..... might not do it in the driveway, but with a load...lookout!

danger of CO poisoning. you won't know it when it is happening... no smell, or anything... if you can smell fumes at all, then you know you are getting some CO in the car with you! and that is BAD NEWS. you can overwhelm the built in ventilation of the car....you could black out behind the wheel and not even know it was going to happen....

just putting that out there, not making this stuff up...

Well, i'm not going to be a dick either, but i'm calling it now:

We've all warned him. We've all done it out of his best interest. Let him enjoy his ghetto-rig exhaust until he can save up for an exhaust. Instant Gratification is one thing, but the safety of himself, as well as the long-term well-being of his car is an entirely different gamble, for foolish reasons. It reminds me of this hilarious video of not waiting to save the racing for the track.
