So as most of you all know the tunnel to replace the earthquake damaged alaskan way viaduct is now going to cost at least another 2 billion, posibly 4 billion dolars of our money to build. first off voters tuned the tunnel down no that is being forced appon us Mayor Nicholes and His city councel henchmen have decided that we are "too confused to understand it" and now they want to make the disicion for us. It's this kind of arogance that just pisses me the **** off. I just sent an email to my legislator as well as Gov. gregoire (sp?) explaning how ******* pissed I am. This means people in spokane are going to be paying for an over budgeted tunnel that they will never use. How rediculous can this get peope? Am I the only one frustrated about this? Please share any frustration you have!

honestly i hate the via duct and think a tunnel would be alot better!! just my .02!! btw i dont pay WA taxes so i guess it wont affect me anyway ;)

Alaskan Way is the name of the road. the road is built on a viaduct that spans over the seattle waterfront.

The Viaduct is pictured below the green line

Just look at all that waterfront property that will open up for development! Portland is having some of the same issues with I 5 going along the Willamette River. There is talk of relocating the freeway.

Excuse me! Relocate the freeway where?

Having the tax payers pay for these pet projects is in fashion these days.
You want a new stadium too? Keep your mouth shut and pay up.

actually...on the news today, it appears as though they are not going to raise the gas tax (again), they are going to be doing tolls it looks like, to get it paid for. Which is the smart thing to do. Get the mafackers to pay for it if they are going to use it!

That will just slow traffic. The new Tacoma narrows bridge will be the same way.

which is fine...it's going to be a single toll, coming from the peninsula to the 'mainland'. I'm sure they are going to have some sort of tollpass, where you drive through and get your card read.

Well, I wouldn't worry about anything happening in the next 10 years, we'll have it sent to the city council 8 times and form a million dollar special task force to waste money and time, then 10 years from now maybe we'll break ground and the cost will be 10X what it would be if we just dug the damn hole......sounds a bit like the Monorail problem...This city is F#$%d when it comes to making a decision and making things happen....

especially with mass transit and/or freeways. How long has the I-5 construction gone on in the south end between 320th and Tacoma?

I say bite the bullet and build a light rail system from Northgate to Tacoma, and from Bellevue to West Seattle. Yeah, we'll have congestion nightmares for 10 years...but damn it will be worth it. I used to live in portland and dealt with the expansion of their MAX system when it moved into our neighborhood in North PDX

Portland's got the right idea, but they also don't have the hills and rivers like Seattle....I love the Quadrants....makes life easy and knowing where stuff's at even easier....

This just smacks of the "Big Dig" in Boston. Check out how that's gone and you'll see the future for WA. 10X the original cost and 10X the time projection and its still crap.....

portland has some hills...primarily in the west. But they do have the biggest natural obstacle, the willamette river.

The City Counsel is doing the same thing to us here in Austin. We voted against this LIGHT RAIL crap 3 times now and they are still going to build it. We also voted against toll roads. Not only are they building some anyways, they are going to turn some of the existing roads that we already paid for into tolls.

I just dont understand how they can do it if the people vote it down.

Well we got the hills and s*** on the west side which can get a bit confusing but yes we only really have a few waterways to contend with. The problem down here is that our freeways were made to handle 1980's traffic load....

Light rail has worked sweet down here especially if you are downtown and it's free. Plus you can go out to the airport for something like 4 bucks from downtown which it would cost you about 30 bucks with a cab. YTeah it sucks during construction but after that it's nice
