2003 Mazda Protege 5
I have a 2003 protg 5 and just got some shity news, the electrode form my sparkplug some how broke off in my fourth cylinder, and damaged the cylinder wall, and is going to cost a s*** load to fix it, if it is fixable at all. It is probably more cost efficient to buy a new motor, I need to know the cost for a new or rebuilt motor or a better motor possibly a speed motor because if I have to put a one in might as well go faster. Please let me know if you have any input on this, and if you know where to get one.

Thanks

Unfortunately, the MSP motor is the exact same as the P5 motor. I think a long block FS-DE is like $600 but I'm not too sure about that.

yeah, what Raider said. If the screw got spat out (after breaking the electrode) it will be sitting in the mesh screen above the pre-cat.

You will want ot be there whenthe dealer takes off the intake manifold. That way you can seefor sure if the screws came out. I am sure my local dealer would put a screwin and say it was fine. I hate my local dealer.

I hope it is the screws, and it is fixed without hassle. Otherwise, car-parts.com is good there is also www.mazdarecycling.com/

WAIT!! that might be warranteed!!!

the 2003 Protege5 had a recall for VCTS screws coming loose and bouncing around in the engine compartment. If a screw got loose, bounced around, damaged the electrode, and thus blew the motor, Mazda should be held responsible.

That is the best F'ing news Ive heard all day (omg)!!!! Well I will keep my fingers crossed, because I really dont want to replace my engine..... Well thanks so much, I will keep you updated hopefully your right :)

look at the thread and compare your VIN. If it is in the list of VIN numbers, it is recalled, and you can fight your way with Mazda USA.

Well unless their is another recall for 2003 p5s that were built in October of 2002 Im ******.. thanks guys but I think Im S.O.L.

I had to replace my motor...oil starvation...Mazda's factory warranty ran out....but my extended warranty didn't...word.
$4k engine & install for $150...can't beat that w/a baseball bat.

How the hell did you starve an engine of oil with an auto? Remind me to give you hell (and Luke also) when you return (glare) .

The recall from Mazda is for cars specifically made between March 3rd through july 21st 2003. However, if they take off the intake manifold and see missing screws, then it is time to get a lawyer and sue for a new motor referencing that Mazda does know at one time they fall out (if the dealer does like suspect they would and try to back out of it).

also, since its an 03, you may still have normal factory warranty...how many miles do you have?

Electrodes don't just fall off spark plugs. Guaranteed it was a screw. Mine was outside of the VIN range and the dealer replaced the intake manifold no charge.

Jack, you have a RARE find, a dealer that replaces stuff without a hassle! If I runinto warranty work, I will just trailer my car up there to your dealer. Mine sucks sweaty donkey balls.
