I have a question and need an answer

Ok I have a quick question that I need answered. A friend of mine is looking at a set of wheels for his MS3. The wheels are 8" wide and a 40mm offset. He is dead set on these things and is determined to make them work. Is it feasible to have a reputable machine shop shave 8-10mm of the mounting face of the wheel to give it a 48-50mm offset? Any advice or experience would be helpful. Just please don't suggest that he looks for different wheels. I have already suggested this approach. I told him that I would do my best to find out for him. Thanks in advance.

shaving that much off the mounting face of a wheel is just insanely sensitive. it's TOO easy to screw up (assuming anyone will even do it for you), because just the smallest bit will have your wheel flopping around like a wounded duck...=/ which wheels are soooo good that he won't take no for an answer?

8-10 mm is a LOT of material to remove and will render the wheels unsafe. If he's looking to be upside down in a ditch, that's a good way to do it.

10 mm would be a very bad idea. I talked with a rep from tenzo about doing this very thing and they told me that 5mm would be acceptable on the wheel that I was looking at. I don't know if the same would be true for other brands. One thing that would almost certainly happen if you took 10mm off is that your brake calipers would be occupying the same space as the wheel spokes, and if you remember your physics, that doesn't work. Also, the wheel studs would be too long and you would have to switch to open ended nuts.
