Mine has that many PM's too but it also messes up the sidebars by saying wacky stuff

those are user rep ratings
try deleting a pm to see if that updates your total properly

FYI.

I had the same problem and your suggestion worked. You might want to sticky this and put something along the lines of "65535 Private Messages" as the title. That's what I searched for.
