Hybrid CX-50 in Edmunds Comparison Test

Brief comparison...They like the Honda the most but rate the Hybrid CX-50 right up there with the Honda. Not surprising, it seems the Mazda is most enjoyable to drive and has the nicer interior and overall design.

Honda's don't come with a spare tire or vented seats at any price, so was not an option for us. I did like the way it 'shifted' though, compared to the Mazda. Not your typical boring cvt...

My partner drives a previous gen CR-V hybrid and I’m a big fan of the powertrain. Very quiet, effortless torque, good fuel economy in town (when it’s not 0F or colder) and pretty well equipped for an EX-L with a heated steering wheel, heated side mirrors, heated seats, adaptive cruise control, and a large moon roof. It will have me looking extra hard at the CX-50 (and 2026 CX-5) hybrid for my next vehicle. The only downside of the CX-50 hybrid to me personally is the engine note. I really wish they could’ve made the Skyactiv-G engine work with the Toyota Hybrid System. To my knowledge, they operate on similar principles to the Atkinson engines found in the Toyota Hybrids when at low load, mimicking an Atkinson cycle. Would’ve sounded way better, which is my main concern.

Im kinda old school and fighting the EV/hybrid thing so boring me I went with the NA engine. I didn’t care for the Hybrid power plant I drove in the Rav4 , while nothing really bad about the Toyota ,I just wanted to keep the engine as simple as possible. The car however was completely boring to drive and void of any personality. The Honda was spacious and offered a comfortable ride . The power plant a 1.5T felt over worked to me with some reports being negative on the Transmission. I then looked at the CX-50 and immediately loved the way it drove and operated. Performance wise it’s comparable to everything else given all things being equal. But driving a Mazda is the real difference they are beautifully designed and allow the driver to connect to his machine.
