HVAC Question

Has anyone else noticed that when the air mode is set to defrost that air comes out of the vents on the driver and passenger side? I'm not referring the side window defrosting vents on the dash, but rather the adjustable round vents. No air comes out of the center vents.

I presume this is normal to aid the side window defrosting process, but I want to make sure. Otherwise, a HVAC flap may be stuck or out of position.

I think this is how mine works. I recall last winter I was using those side vents to clear the side windows so I could see outside better.
I will double check today.

Yeah that's normal. It's not only what mine does, but both of my VWs were the same way.

I just wanna know why defrost mode refuses to kick on the A/C. I've had numerous occasions where the defrost mode hasn't done anything in the way of defrosting my windshield but as soon as I turn the A/C on it's perfect. All of my other cars kicked the A/C on in defrost mode.... is everyone else's the same way?

This is the way my Mazda 2 works...and I love it...if I need the AC on to take out excess humidity...primarily in the spring and fall...I turn it on....if it is just cold...and I need heat on the windshield to remove frost...then I don't have to have the AC on...and put that additional load on the alternator and battery in the cold winter months...that are so hard on batteries....YMMV

In other cars, people de-mod the control panel by snipping one or two wires to ensure that AC is only controlled by the button, not by the knob or slider that selects defrost. The car will defrost quite well using fresh air heated if necessary but only as long as the A/C is kept off. Once you start using the AC it is difficult to keep the windshield clear without it due to the condensation that will occur (temp+humidity delta inside vs. outside).

I definitely prefer to have control over the A/C rather than it kicking on automatically.
