How to Install MSP Radio Pocket in P5 / Protege

I got tired of the "ghetto" look of the Scosche Dash kit and the constant rattling from the Single Din Head unit. The part numbers needed for this install are TA06-66-9B1 Bracket and BJ1H-66-9M0 Radio Pocket (Pic1). Also need 2 small plastic nuts and bolts. The Bracket does not come with the nuts and bolts so I bought them from Home depot. I chose the plastic/ nylon bolts since it is hard to push them into place and the plastic ones are less likely to scratch the painted metallic surface of the dash. Total time taken 30 mins.

1. Remove the stock radio or remove the Dash Kit. The Scosche just pulls out. I found it easier to remove the metal sleeve from the dash kit and then gently prying it out in order not to scratch the dash. To remove the metal sleeve for the head unit, gently pull down the tabs with a small screwdriver. (Pic2)

2. The bracket goes face up into the pre-drilled holes in the dash. Careful not to scratch the metal trim. The bracket's upper holes will fit into the tabs above the hole. Gently insert the small bolts into the hole and secure with the nuts. (Pic3).

3. Insert the metal bracket (comes with the head unit) into the upper slot and secure by pushing the tabs. Ensure this does not move. (Pic4)

4. Connect the wire harness (and antenna) and insert the head unit into the sleeve, making sure the tab at the back slides into the hole in the metal bracket at the back of the opening. (Pic5)

(Continues in the next thread since I can only upload 5 pics)

5. Slide in the Radio Pocket, it has a couple of tabs on each side to secure it to the dash and also locks into the rear bracket. (Pic6)

6. Install the trim around the head unit and done. Pic 7 is the finished product.

While it the radio pocket is pricey, it has a factory finish compared to the Scosche Dash kit. Also, it fits flush into the dash and does not stick out.

Thanks to 1sty for providing the part numbers.
North Hill Mazda in Calgary obtained the parts in 1 day and the total cost was $150Cdn.

awesome write up! i was gonna post pics of the same installation process but i guess i dont have to. ^_^

dont forget to tape your center dash bezel at the edges closest to the radio w/ masking tape or painter's tape to help prevent scratches. i have some scratches and gashes on my center dash from my stupid clumsiness removing the stock radio. the plastic push bolts to secure the metal bar is a good idea, i just used screws and bolts. even though the player & bracket was secure, there was still some rattling going on, so i used a small piece of cardboard to shim the cd player & pocket. so far so good.

one question, does you cd player sit a little further back into the dash than the pocket? the outer trim bezel of the cd player isnt flush with the pocket and it sorta annoys me, but i can live with it.

The CD Player I have sits flush with the factory pocket. I used a small 8mm bolt at the back of the CD player and wrapped it with electrical tape so that it would fit into the vertical bracket behind the CD Player. I was quite surprised at how clean it looks.

I just put in mine! My boyfriend (sampson on the forum) painted it silver to match my other painted interior.

gapeachsp5, that looks great! I'm glad sampson got that pocket from me. :) Glad to see it have a great new home!

I have the sosche kit and was trying to decide weather or not to buy this msp pocket. With the sosche kit having the space up top it makes the bushing in the back of the radio not fit into the hole. I hate to rig somethin up then it would just make it harder to get out also. I called the stealership they want $106 for the pocket and $19 for the bracket thats alot of money just for a freakin pocket.

Try to find a used msp or mp3 pocket. I had a Scosche kit (or however the hell you spell it) and it was so ugly in comparison. Plus, I like having a door on it so that my crap isn't visible. Laser03pro, I didn't have an issue getting an aftermarket cd player to work w/the S-kit. They have other means of support, so unless you're using one of the Mazda radios, I don't think you'll have an issue. I had a Pioneer w/the S-kit and now a factory Kenwood w/the msp pocket.

I just installed my sosche kit and got it to hold pretty well I think I like it plus my valentine one display fits perfect in the pocket havnt installed it yet tho. Here you go looks pretty good to me.

Chopstick: I think I'm going to buy that radio in a few weeks. Like it? I had a Pioneer and loved it but it couldn't play mp3 files so I got rid of it. I've missed it ever since!

yeah, it's a solid deck. it has most of the features of the higher models, except the higher price. sounds great out of the box, i haven't done any tuning yet, but i'm sure i can tweak it to make it sound a bit better.

Yeh I love mine it does sound great I didnt think the crappy stock speakers could sound that good. The sosche kit works great also no rattles at all I have the nub on the back of the radio going into the hole on the center bar and I put a peice of rubber on top of the pocket between it and the radio bracket to keep it tight.

i got me a pocket from venezuela (almost identical to the msp pocket) and i have the same problem...

questions

a) what does the TA06-66-9B1 bracket factually hold?
b) i tried to order the TA.. number down here, won't work, has anybody got a bracket he could sell me ?
c) look at the pic and don't tell me it's meant that way... you can see the nuts/washers or whatever this is.. looks totally ghetto..any idea?
