what are the first signs that would tell me that i need to replace my clutch?

I can hear a clicking sound from outside when i let off the clutch with too little gas as the car struggles starting from a stand still.

That is not the clutch. IT happens in my car too. Put it in gear let go off the clutch all at once. IF it stalls out rite away ur clutch is good, if it takes a little bit its going. And if u r driving and the clutch is out, and u floor it and ur engine revs up more then u r going like ur clutch is partially in, then it is completly gone.

The clicking usually is the throwout bearing. When the clutch starts slipping, i.e. you hit the gas and the rpms go up and the car stays the same speed, the clutch is shot.

explain the throwout bearing?
every car I've been in I've noticed this: a good clutch engages close to hte floorboard. The closer to your say, knee the clutch engages, the more it is going out.

My rx-7's clutch picks up in the last 2" and has for 115,000 miles. Every car is different. It might even be adjustable, i don't know. Clicking would be a bearing or maybe synchros??
