How To: Greddy Full Auto-timer Install

While installing my newly acquired Turbo Timer into my Mazdaspeed protege, i found that there's a HOW-TO for BLITZ (found here: http://members.tripod.com/church56/blitz.html ) and a HOW-TO for HKS's Type 0 (found here: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37921) but none for the Greddy Full Auto Turbo timer.

It took me longer looking for information on were to splice the VSS( Vehicle Speed Sensor) wire than the complete install!!!

so, i took some pictures and here's what i found.

The easiest way to install this fabulous turbo timer.
also, excuse my english for i am a latino guy who barely knows any english.

Start by disconnecting the NEGATIVE (-) from the battery.

I will choose a location for you, since this is the location most people use for being the easiest and the stealthiest(a word??) it is located where the coin pocket under the steering wheel.
timer_loc.jpg

drill a hole behind it big enough to fit the plug, or you may do a small one and disassemble the plug. (if you need to know how to disasemble the plug...just do the hole big enough to pass the plug thru.)

now, we're gonna splice the 3 main cables from the turbo timer second harness onto the ignition keyswitch wires.

cut the plug that has only 3 cables, the plug is white.
splice the RED wire onto the RED wire from ignition.(shown below)
splice the GREEN wire onto blue wire (in the picture, it would be the wire behind the black/white wire)
splice the BLUE wire onto the black/white stripe wire.

after doing this, lets wire up the VSS cable (vehicle speed sensor) onto the ECU wire.

Let's start by removing the carpet from the front of the passenger side, also removing the kick panel on the left of the passenger side.
Now remove the four bolts holding the big metal bracket, the ECU is located right behind this as shown below:

undo_bolts_2.jpg

after this, try to turn the bracket around to expose the ECU like this:

now, search for a small cable that is GREEN with a RED stripe, this is your VSS cable where you will splice the PURPLE cable onto after running it from the Turbo Timer via behind the dash as shown below.

now, you may want to put the ecu back together or leave it for later.

Next, lets connect the e-brake sensor cable( BROWN) onto the cable that comes from the e-brake, i wanted to do it as close as possible, but the cable from the e-brake changes color after the first plug and being that the cable is long enough, i decided to splice onto it at the e-brake itself as shown below:
center.jpg

e-brake.jpg

you may want to put the center console back together now.

After this, the only cables you should have left are a GREY cable and a BLACK CABLE(GROUND)
we won't be using the gray cable, so you may just leave it hanging.
I left the ground last since if connected (in case you had forgotten to disconnect the battery) may damage your ECU and/or Turbo Timer, both being pretty expensive parts and one of them leaving you stranded for a couple of days until acquired.

The location that i chose the ground wire to be conencted to is a bolt holding the dash to the frame, it is found after removing the plastic panel on the driver side on the side of the dashboard.

now, if you haven't put anything back together, it would be a good time to get to know your turbo timer and test that it works. The instructions that come with the turbo timer explains how to set up the speed sensor and how to set up the auto-timer feature, this is not covered on this how-to.

i hope this helps someone when installing this awesome turbo timer.

i literally jumped when it worked...
i wish i had seen a how to like this when installing mine, but it gave me the opportunity to create my own.

Enjoy

Awesome write up, I'm going to install my Greddy Turbo timer tonight. I love how detailed the pics are. If you go out and get some velcro, it will hold the TT in place nicely. Great job! Thanks!

this is nice since i can't read japanese! once i get around to installing mine this will help. thanks

and yet, no mod has moved this!! arrgghh

so much work for nothing...

lol, j/k...if only one person uses it, then i've served my purpose and will die in peace

great job. I find it amazing that our car has been out for over 3 years and this is the first "how to" on one of the most popular TT's for our car. I will definately use this in the future. thanks man.

My next how-to will be installing a FS-ZE cam on the protege...i can actually do it form memory..but i won't have pictures...

that'll come this weekend...

Thats awesome that you have written this up! I was never able to figure out where to put the purple wire on the ECU. That was the only reason for me not writing the how to my self.

This is a lifesaver!, i just got my turbo timer and it's in JAPANESE!!! it's cool as hell but also very useless

Thanks Alejo

BTW, NA people, if you find that the turbo timer keeps shuting off every time you turn the key off, cut the VSS/purple wire from the TT. I wasted a full night rewiring it only to find out that the VSS was messing up the TT. Now it works perfectly :D

Mine used to work fine, and started acting up, so i took it off of the mode where it calculates the run time and just set it to run for 1 min. That worked for a while but now it will shut off randomly before the minute is up. Sometimes right when you turn it off and other times random. Sometimes it shuts the car off right away but never turns off the acc power and it killed the battery. Any ideas?

O ya, and the darn blue backlight will randomly come on and off when driving.

What a piece of s***.

improperly wired? that's the only thing i can think off

mine has been working flawlesly since install. the way i wired it was

Red to ingnition black and white 12V
blue to ignition red and black 1st ignition
green to ignition Blue 2nd ignition

you also have to set the TT to accept that wiring, since you can run it off the ACC or IG

Would seem that way, but why did it work fine for a about 6 mos though, ya know?

this is how i did it based upon what the guy I bought it from told me:

RED - Black 12v
GREEN - Blue Ignition #1
BLUE - Black/Red Ignition #2

The way you have it, it looks like the red is hooked up to the ACC wire (black/white axccording to what i have on my instructions), and we are reversed on our ignition #1 & 2 wires

So which way should it be for the way he told me to wire it? Run off of ignition, correct? How could it run off of ACC since there will be no power there when the key is turned off.
