How-To...Gauge Disassembly

You need 2 large #194 LEDs and 2 small #74 LEDs. I just ordered them from https://www.superbrightleds.com . Make sure you get the 6LED #194 bulbs and not the 4LED ones. The brighter the better.

So I'm presume that these bulbs will change the entire cluster then, right? Thank you for the website, I'll probably order mine tomorrow if they actually will change the entire cluster.

hehe justin!!

theres no temp/fuel gauge on those pics!!!

btw how have you ended up with so many??

for all those silly people i'm currently working on a solution to fix gauges.... i'll let you know how i go with it!!!

I love junkyards...they are like candy stores to me.

will all 3 of the gauges from the es/p5 work on the dx?? i dont have a tach and i dont like the look of having a big ass tach sitting on top of my dash.

I don't think that has been tried yet. I'm not sure if the wiring is still all there to just plug the stock tach in and have it working. I'm pretty sure that it would as it would be a real pain in the ass for Mazda to have 3-4 different wiring harnesses for the cars and the tach is run off the ECU which should be the same. You might have to be the guinea pig for it though. At the rate people break their guages around here though, if it doesn't work I bet you could sell the guage cluster for what you bought it for.

wait..did you pick up an extra set of MSP gauges..in your area? for like 75$? If so, I'm going to kick your ass.
Regular Protege sedan.guages from a '99. $50

hey so changing the led's would change the color of the hole cluster, say i have green and i put blue bulbs, the hole thing changes?????

There are two large LED's that control the color of the gauges and then smaller LED's for the idiot lights.

actually, the two large #194's light up just the center of the gauge cluster, the other two (#74's) light up the tach, and temp gauge...then the idiot lights are each seperate leds if swapped.

Yep...your right...I forgot about the other small LED's that are the same color as the 2 large ones. I should have double checked before I posted. Jeez I'm lazy.

hey i canged the two large bulbs for blue ones, but the green only got brighter and didn't change color. maybe it doesn't work in my car. Help please???????

THANKS SO MUCH for posting this, esp. with the pics!!!! I just replaced by temp/fuel cluster after breaking the gas needle a couple months ago. The How To was key!

Try this at your own risk

I know this one hehe

How this works is:
The back of the gauge face itself (the black thing with the numbers on it that tell you how fast you are going, the temp, etc.) has a few different layers of "silkscreened" color, then a cross hatch design to disperse the light. What you need to do is:

Take off the actual gauge face. This will involve removing needles!!! Please try at your own risk. I suggest that you pick up another cluster or at least part of one before you attempt this on your own. Anyways, to get the face off, you "simply" remove needle, and then remove tiny screws on the face. Then with a medium grit sandpaper, sand off all coloring until you get down to the white. The sanding is obviously done on the BACK of the face. Do not sand off the numbers!

Then, reinstall in vehicle with different colored bulbs and TAH DAH! All good. I have done this mod on previous cars. I personally broke off my temp needle while installing my reverse indiglos in my protege. If anyone has a temp gauge that they will sell me fair price, PM ME. I know for a fact this works, as I have done it on multiple brands of vehicles. Though, I do not know if the protege needles are glued in or what cuz I pulled pretty hard before it snapped off and landed in my back window (I was sitting in drivers seat, gauges were in my lap). Best bet though is to use a fork. Slide fork underneath needle, and pry up. Take it easy though, cuz if you break the needle off, you will have a pretty bright light to stare at instead of a nice pretty orange needle.

If this confused you more than before I am sorry. Just PM me and I will help you out more on this.

Hey justin. I successfully put the MSP gauges in my car. Then successfully burnt the MSP board in the process..At least I can chalk it up to R&D and now i know that if you have a DX, you can never have the mileage match if you want a new gauge cluster..Unless you want to get real complicated and completely disassemble the board..Like I did all day today.

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that. I have an extra circuit board here if you want to play with it. It came out of a 99 model with the green odometer.

spicy, do you have picture of the back of the MSP gauge cluster circuit board.
someone mentioned it to be different than the one shown here
