How-to: +2psi for a cheap $5

I just finished reading all the posts on this thread. I think I'm going to go ahead and do this.

I had the joep mbc and fcd on for more than a year. But the last few months got to the point where I wanted to sell the car. I would get fuel cut constantly, major hesitation at 5psi, even after lowering the boost to 8psi. So, I took off the mbc and fcd. Right now, stock (no mbc, or fcd) I run about 7.5-8psi with a 1-1.5spi spike. I want to get back to 10psi, but holding steady this time. I have all the supporting mods, except the afc.

btw... the car feels awesome without the mbc and fcd.
Thanks,
Dave

One thing to note is that even with spring on like this, the boost (for me atleast) still isnt 100% steady, mine would spike to 9.5 then settle to 9.0 then drop to 8.0psi. Better then an mbc but still did not hold a steady amount of boost.

But, i did love the way it felt and definatly suggest it because if it doesnt work right, just pop it off. Can't wait to try it when the weather warms up with my new AFC.

Let us know how it works for you.

do you have to hook the spring on the right side of the arm or can you hook it on the left side? i tried this today and its a b*tch....i need some easy method other than this.....

Ok, IK KNOW IT'S CRAPPY SO DON'T COMMENT.

Here is how you should hook it:

And if you want a quick trick to help installing the spring, just go under the car, hook the site in the blue circle. To install the side in the red circle, just tie a piece of string on that side and just putt on it from the top of the engine. That way you only have to pull on the string and you can just use a pair of long nose pliers to help you align it properly to hook on the actuator heat shield.

What's funny is that the "renowned and respected Joe P" even told me that this was a usable mod and worked fine. I talked with him at great lengths about it awhile ago.

But then again, he did think that Magnus exhaust really would add 77 whp.

Britt

Joe P tried to convince me over dinner one time to running a ton of nitrous and C16 race fuel.

the damn hook wont stay on the freakin arm...i tried to hook it to the arm and stretch it to the shield, damn thing feel off every time!! i tried the opposite, hookin it to the shield and stretching it to the arm, that was the closet i got. i just couldnt stretch it enough to catch on the arm!!!! $&^*(#

Are you using the right spring? I hooked it to where the arm connects to whatever. It's a round ring kind of thing. Damn man... it took me about 5 min from the top.

735, try this out man. Crawl up under with a pair of long needle nose pliers. Hang the hook from where the actuator arm connects. Then grab with the pliers and instead of reaching to connect it to that actuator shield thing, try hooking it onto the where the vacuum hose attaches. It is much easier to reach underneath and achieves the same effect, and puts less twist on the spring. Heres a pic, the pink is the spring. see if that helps.

I just installed this mod while changing my oil. It is kinda a b**** but I used the string method and it wasn't so bad. I took my small radiator pipe lose to give me some working room from above. Bout to go test it out. I took my MBC off also.

sweet let us know how it works out and you can do mine (poke)

Looks like the mod works pretty damn good. I hit it pretty hard with the engine semi-cold and I hit fuel cut a couple of times but the boost was right in between 9 and 10 psi, which is where I want to be so I don't blow my s*** up. I will say the spool-up is just a tad bit slower but not really laggy... a nice steady climb.

thats about as bad as the kid who told me that he unplugs his wastegate on his 99 gst and runs 5 seconds in the quarter. i dont like it the only good way to do boost control is get an external wastegate and have an EBC installed

Even Corky Bell mentionned that using a "spring" is a good way to control boost. I can give you the exact page in "Maximum Boost" if you still are doubtfull.

ive been running this method for a little over a year now and damn it works so good...not a problem in sight! holds steadier than a mbc too!

I've been using the 'spring'' since this thread was written and have had no problems with it. I don't see any reason to use a mbc over the spring if your only wanting 1-2 psi.
