If by warm up you mean idling while parked, not necessary anymore with modern vehicles unless you're in a cold climate. Otherwise, just fire it up and go, but drive gently for the first couple of miles until the car is at standard operating temp.

Even in cold climates, not really required (other than to have warm air to melt ice etc). I simply start the car, back out of the garage, wait for the door to close and am on my way. Plus 30 or minus 30 C. As you mentioned though, no beating on the car until it's fully warmed up.

+1

My car will usually rev itself to about 2k when I start it up. I'll let it idle until the revs drop to around 1.2K(about 10-15 secs). And I'll go away gently, shifting under 3k for the first minutes.

I let it warm up for at least a half hour especially in the winter so it's nice and toasty inside(headshake ....seriously about two minutes max and then drive slowly until it's at normal operating temp...then zoom-zoom

i warm mine up for 10 minutes.

10 minutes??? I guess gas must be cheap where you live......I start mine and back out, let the garage close like the other user mentioned and I am on my way. But then again I live in sunny, beautiful California....(thinkbeer

I start it will it floored, then let the rev limiter bounce for 5 seconds or so then its all good.

My car doesnt even get warmed up, I start it, pull out of the garage, wait for garage to shut and drive 6 miles to work.

I almost think the OP is really asking how long do you take it easy (shifting below 3k) before you tromp on it or go WOT.

Maybe I just read it differently than everyone else.

gas over in jersey is 3.50 for premium. but on wednesdays and saturdays and sundays they have a special. 6 cents off!! woooot

I don't really let my car warm up. No need to, unless you plan on hammering out of your driveway. I drive it easy. But usually it sits at idle for around 30-60 seconds while I fidle with my seatbelt and the radio and s***. There is really no reason to let it "warm up" if all you are going to do is drive.

BMW requires all there cars to be driven for a warm up, when I looked up the manual on the M5 I was about to buy, it said to drive the car and shifter under 2000rpm's until the engine is warmed up.

I do the same with my car now, I don't boost at all until I have the engine all toasty.

Our cars heat up pretty quickly due to the turbo and three cats. But just because the temp guage gets to the centre line reallly quick it doesn't mean the oil is up to temp. That just means the water is up to temp, and that runs on a closed loop until the thermostat clicks. Modern day oil is designed to work better and have more lubrication as it hits a certain temperature.

I think most people here though realize that driving gently for the first five or tn minutes is a good idea. Just keep it below 4k.

I used to hate staying at my Ex-girlfriends because to go home I would always basically have to pull straight on the freeway. I would always sit in her driveway for a minute or two and let at least the water get up to temp.

try not to all of a sudden GET ON IT! Either. Gradually working her up to speed is always the best way to go. My Vicky likes to be stroked a little bit. She always seems more responsive later on if I tease her first...wait...what are we talking about?
