How is the power in the 2.5L?

Hey guys, currently drive a 07 Accord 4 cyl and in the market for a compact SUV. Kind of narrowed down between Forester (XT in particular) and CX-5 (2.5L AWD GT in particular) like many people.

Obviously the FXT will be much quicker, but how is the CX-5 in real life driving? Do you feel its more than adequate? I do feel my Accord is a little sluggish and would like to have something more peppy.

Impression of peppyness is subjective. You'll get just about every possible answer I suspect. Why not go for a test drive and see for yourself?

For the record, I feel that my AWD 2.5 is plenty preppy. The low RPM torque peak makes it feel way more preppy than the simple HP numbers suggest.

I traded a twin turbo Audi Allroad. I am as happy as can be. Plenty of power for spirited driving. Not 400 hp, but plenty.

thanks guys, i'm planning to test it out soon but wanted to see what others feel about it. for a while, i didnt even think about the cx5 because of the low HP numbers but something came up and made me think it over. the FXT is just a little out of my price range. hope it doesnt disappoint!

Stab the throttle half way to test it out. If you push it normally, the engine will not downshift as its trying to save gas. If you completely stab throttle, you will feel a click. There is a button under gas pedal to tell computer to take off. The CX-5 has same HP as the CRV, but is a full second faster 0-60 due to low torque peak and gearing. Zoom-zoom.

I agree. I swapped a 2010 CRV LX 2WD for a 2015 CX-5 Touring AWD. The Mazda is both much quicker, and, more fuel efficient. I also own a M-B GLK350 4Matic that's quicker than the Mazda, but, I certainly don't think the Mazda is a dog.

With Texas 2 lane roads routinely 70 mph limits we invariably get slow movers and the need to pass and get back in quickly. Acceleration on passing is good at those speeds.

0-60 in 7.6 isn't bad at all when you compare it to say a CR-V at 9 seconds 0-60.

My CX5 with the 2.5L is very good and I came from a Mazda7 with turbo. You also mentioned a Forester XT and it will blow you away. ed

The 2.5 in the Mazda 5 I felt was more spirited than the CX-5. I dislike the drone when going uphill in auto, example, the CX-5 tends to be in 4th when it should be in 3rd.

I haven't noticed that myself.... most of my hill climbing is when I feel I should be in 5th and CX-5 wants to try it in 6th....I then manually put it in 5th.

Granted this is on a pass with a 70+MPH speed limit.

I noticed it on our 1600KM road trip through the Canadian Rockies at those speeds. It happens in town as well. Being in a hilly area the drone is all too common. Even the RAM 1500 with Hemi I use to have had the same sound, just a little more pronounced. Odd.

If the sound of the engine (which I find to be very quiet and civilized at low rpm) bothers you, just downshift a gear, that's what the gear selector is for.

The shift logic is built around efficiency but downshifting a gear will not drastically change the fuel consumption while climbing, it will just sound a little less relaxed at mid rpm.

What you call "droning" is actually the sound of a very clean burning engine with exceptional exhaust gas scavenging and optimal valve timing.
