how can i increase my displacement 1.8->2.0

hi-perf

do not modify your car
:
1999 Protege ES
ok my friend says all i should need is a new crank, because of the de-strokeness of my engine compared to the 2.0 (read: same bore size, but stroke is less). now i know i would need a new ECU, but the wiring harness is the same i think.

i know i need a new tranny too, but is this all i need?

(waits for hopes to get shot down)

my engine is an F series engine (FP-DE). i am trying to get to the 2.0, or FS-DE.

you should be able to just get a 2.0L crank and swap it over.....and you also get a free increase in compression ratio too :) apparently to 9.7:1

the maximum boring level would only be about 3mm which is about 0.15L increase in displacement...

If you want a crap high end powerband, but more lowend torque it may be worth it to you...But probably only if you can source the wrecked parts...

Stock for stock the FP's rev better and make faster protege's than the FS equipped cars (however some argue that is simply the increase in weight that accompanies the FS equipped cars)...So on you car an FS with the better torque may help...But it feels so sluggish around 5500+ rpm, that you will immediately want to get into helping the poor thing breathe...But again stock for stock they both make around 100whp on a Dynojet...The FP revs happier and more willingly...the FS pulls harder at low rpm...Those are the main differences between the two...

the 1.8 and 2.0L made up exactly the same will make the same amount of power...the stoked 2.0L will just make it at a lower rpm

Rather than ******* around with stroking why not try boost or Nos.

It's alot cheaper and you will get alot more out of your money. rather that a 5% HP gain. You can easily get 35% with less trouble.

the only problem with me having a 1.8 is that they dont make hardly ANYTHING for my engine. everything they make is for the 2.0's....

can anyone tell me besides cams that would work in both a 1.8 and 2.0?

Engine Swap would probably be easier in the long run.

I built a turbo kit from scratch, there is always a way...

Have you thought of Nos or NX. It's cheap and fun.

i thought it was concluded that nos was bad - well not bad but not worth it for the gain it puts out on our cars.

also i was at the drag strip with a yellow mp3, not sure if hes on here. i BEAT him in the 1/4 mile time, he had a 65shot of zex nos and i guess his mp3 ecu, which may have messed him up.

i think he just cant drive, but i ran against him again and he put up a 16.19.

The heads are the same to my knowledge Hi-perf...All the turbo manifolds that bolt up to the FS will fit the FP...So you have plenty of options with that...Some s*** might need to be custom, I don't know if the intake tracks and radiator location and other s*** is exactly the same...but wouldn't be hard to have made for your app...

the thing with a turbo, is that flyin miata(protege) has made a 2.0 kit, and now they are in the works of a 1.8 kit. too bad they are very pricey otherwise i would probably save up.

right now i think my clutch is out so now i have to save up. and wouldnt you know it, its so damn hard to find a good one for my tranny

All good things are worth saving money for.

Feep the faith...If you book them, they will come...

bore the cylinders out a few millimeters, that'll increase displacement, also if you're gonna remove enough material to require new pistons, get some low compression pistons and a turbo manifold while you're at it, like 8:1. with the right turbo, your car will own every MSP and boosted 5 here

The Flyin' Protege turbo has been fitted to a 1.8 liter already.

I haven't heard any follow-up in regards to it, however, the manifold should bolt right up to the 1.8-liter head with-out issue. The only thing that might not fit would be the charge piping.

Send Flyin' Protege an e-mail and ask them about it for further info.

The kit is similarly priced as others out there. But, it is worth it.
