How bad do you want to get better mileage???(p5white)

After owning P5 for 5 years I have come to critical conclusion as far as milage that I would like to share.
With the prices of gas going up like crazy I have started to go even slower than my usual speed of 58mph and I discovered that I am getting even better milage.
I have a 5 speed P5 and I have always gotten good milage and I thought that I will never see better numbers.
Right now I try to keep my engine run at 2.5K rpm or less on a highway. Surprise!!! I have gotten 45 miles to a gallon just this week. My record was 43.
I drive 500 miles a week and I used to fill up twice a week. No more. Now I only fill up once and there is nice amount of gas left.

Can any one try this and confirm with me.(uhm)

Warning!
It is a different type of driving. You get home 5 minutes later than usual.
You will be relaxed and stressless.
Also you will see a lot of asholes on the road.

It is true...I have hit the 500 a couple of times, but usually only make it to the low-middle 400's...averaging about 34 MPG...city...

But 2.5K rpm on a highway is what... like 75 or 80 km/h, right? You'll be going much slower than all the regular traffic!

Going well below the average speed of traffic is actually dangerous.

A large percentage of highway accidents are caused by differentials in speed between cars.

If I did that in Texas, I'd probably not have much of a car left... Easier done in states that have speed limits at 55 or 65. That and changing my driving to something like that would send me over the edge, driving that slow really makes my blood boil just because my car isn't comfy, too much damn wind noise and even more engine noise.

what? why is my car always so much higher in the rpm range?

im goin 60 and my car is already at 3K so i would be goin 55 to get that kinda mileage

EDIT: wait u said km/h just saw that

I can confirm that mileage. I drove 55 for a good while trying to get home on a baby spare and got over 40 mpg.

But yeah I wouldn't recommend driving that slow in regular traffic flow. Its dangerous and can cause ALOT of congestion even with just one car going ~10 mph slower than everyone else.

Well if you are in the rightmost lane, then you should be ok right ?

In theory, but there are too many asshats on the road who don't adhere to the "drive right" rule (law). It would work in Germany. They know how to drive properly.

read this thread before i left to pick up the new catch can.

drove 60mph on the highway in the granny lane all the way there and all the way back. Had cruise on the whole time basically. We'll see how the mpg is when I fill up again.

These gas prices have even me, a 19 year old wanna drive fast man, driving slower to save some money. Damn you Bush.

Go equine. Sure it is only one hp, and the fastest "model" tops out at 36 mph, but damn, from the saddle a running horse sure feels fast. With a horse you will save 100% on gas, and as an extra added bonus, you'll never have to mow the lawn again!

Enough to remove the pre-cat, install a header and mid-pipe with high flow cat.

Regardless of what lane you drive in people still have to find a way around you. Have to make everyone on the road shift over can cause lots of problems with people making dumb merges and then getting stuck behind you as traffic speeds by in the other lane. You're probably alright going a bit slower than the average flow but I would not recommend trying to drive 55 while everyone else is going 70.

Huh? Since when does the president set fuel prices? Congress sets the fed tax, the States the state tax, the companies charge what the market will bear and have had to pay higher market prices due to the changes in the global economy... India and China have a growing middle class that is buying and driving cars now. Oil is getting more valuable.

The president has stopped filling the national reserve (a mistake in my opinion)and begged OPEC for mercy. Congress grants tax breaks to the oil companies and forbids more drilling in Alaska.

What else would and could YOU do if you were president??

Instead of crying and whining - maybe we just need to change our habits.

Thank goodness you said something before I did. It's stunning how many people think that the President sets gas prices so high so him and his "Oil Buddies" can get rich. I've heard that argument so many times, it makes me queasy.

...and if i hear one more, 'the oil companies give a kick-back to the manufacturers - that is why they won't install my 50MPG super-gizmo' conspiracy. [sigh]

Actually if you read my post, I WAS talking about driving slower to save MONEY.

I was referring to the fact that Bush has completely ****** the ECONOMY therefore my need to save money. I'm not stupid and I do know that it's not the president that sets the gas price.

Anyway, I was just making a statement. No need to pick it the **** apart.

I'm not trying to add any fuel to the fire here, but I heard the other day on the news, quoting the CEO of Exxon, that if oil prices were driven purely by consumer demand, oil would currently be around $55 a barrel. The oil companies themselves have a larger impact on prices than most people think.

You're not adding fuel to the fire, you actually completely right.

Oh and I take it you play WoW? just an observation with the /threadjack command lol.
