How are the manumatic shifts?

I have been without any problems... Downshift from 3rd to 2nd without any problems. However if I downshift from 2nd to 1st it really stops fast (can't be very good for it)

I have taken it from manual to automatic in all of the gears, without problem.
Hey where did you get the front deflector from? and how does it attach?

Forget that automanual s***! Learn to drive a Manual! Be a Man! Or; at least try to be!

You guys shouldn't be allowing the manumatic to downshift to 1st for you, the reason is that if you're in 4th or 3rd gear and come to a complete stop, it'll skip the 2nd gear on the downshift and hop right into 1st hence why you get the slight jerk. That can't be good for the tranny...

In my auto and in full automatic mode the computer nevers cycles down when stopping. For me it'll go from 4th straight into 1st when I stop. The only time it does go 4>3>2>1 is when I'm doing a rolling stop.

I test drove a 3 with manumatic, and I loved it.

I found it very responsive and fun.
Plus when you want to just forget about shifting, you simply push it back to automatic.

I have a Protege '03 LX, my question is the manumatic on the P5's just as fun?
As I want to upgrade to a P5 in about a year, or should I simply go for the 3?

is it okay to shift down when you slow down instead of pressing the brakes?

Why would you want to? Any wear you save on the brakes is transferred directly to the drivetrain. Brake pads are a lot cheaper and easier to replace than clutch/transmission components.

use both at the same time to slow down faster

That's a myth. You can only slow down as quickly as tire traction allows. If you're using your brakes properly, downshifting won't do anything besides make cool revving noises and wear out your drivetrain.

Every since i got my Mazda 3 from the dealer...i havent drove it in automatic...just manumatic. I'm not a fan for automatics..but since my girl can't drive manual...i decided to get the auto w/ manumatic..and it way fun...

I can't stand manual in city traffic....shifting more times than fast and the furious on the same 1 mile stretch is uncalled for and tiresome for you and your patience. shifts like 1-2-1-2-3-1-2-1-----2-3-4-1-2-1-2-3-4-5-------1 can wear your patience down and increase the road rage you already have after a long day at work....I got manumatic so I have some of the fun as with the manual and feel a lil more control over the shift patterns cause in auto mode speed is sacrificed for gas efficency by shifting to 4th gear before you even reach 35mph...and takes forever and a day to down shift when you wham the pedal down to pass someone in auto mode. as for downshifts....the car most of the times won't let you even downshift till you hit a certain speed Vs. Rev for those issues in mind
but don't fully Quote me on that
I understand what you mean about down shifting cause once you slow down for a red light and it just so happens to turn green before you hit just at or below 5 mph(where it usually automaticly falls from what ever gear you were in to 1) and the tranny didn't down shift. You are now "locked in" 3rd for a few seconds when you apply a lil or alot of pressure on the pedal and kinda sucks unless you have a intake to listen to. Alaso if you switch over from auto to manual chances are by the time you move over it will already have shifted to 4th that fast...also don't go past redline cause you don't gain that much power when you rev all the way up to 7200....

What wear? My impression of engine-breaking is that only wear you have is the split second it takes for the clutch to engage a lower gear. After that you just gradually slow down using the engines resistance... thus saving brake pads by using the more stress-tolerant components that don't really wear down as much.

The engine would still be spinning if you had the clutch pressed down while you use the brakes (at which point you are putting wear on the throw-out bearing), and you'd still be exercising transmission components to put the car in neutral while breaking.

I guess my qualm with that statement is I don't feel that the level of the drivetrains "wearing out" due to laboring against the car's inertia is nearly as high as that of brake pads.

Qualifications/precautions of engine braking:
- I'm assuming you are just shifting reasonably to a lower gear (not dropping it into 2nd when you are going 60 to aid in a panic stop without break pads)
- You're not shifting into first above 10 MPH
- it's always a good idea to still keep you're foot ever-so-slightly on the brake pedal so that you're stop lights turn on and people behind you know you are slowing down... and so that you can slam the brakes on if something silly happens.

manumatic is pretty fun for driving and gives you the best of both worlds except for peeling out, the only disappointment i have with this feature on the new MZ3 is that its only a 4 speed while if u get this option on the base acrua its a 5 speed. another thing about the new mazdas is that in the base model you dont really get anything not side air bags or power windows etc while on the base acrua rsx all of those essential features(for me) are included. sorry if i sound like i dont this car i love it but some things just piss me off
