Hope for us Auto Guys yet...

am i the only one who drives only in Manual mode? except when the dog is in the car...

i thought it was 4k up that would blow up the trannies in low gears.... hmmm

but once u get stronger pistons and rods for the tranny and beef that up... it should be safe to WOT it all through the gears

the turbo install seems alot more complicated than i originally thought..

how hard is it to get to the oil sender location?..

i still gotta hit up the dealer for oil and coolant lines/ fittings.

It's a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get all the parts together and inspect the areas you need to work on several times, it's not so bad. I remember getting ready to do the install and going over the entire procedure in my head over and over and over and over again to make sure I really knew what all needed to be done. Until you can go through the entire install in your head, you're not really ready for it.

The oil sender isn't very hard to get to, but there just isn't a lot of room to work with back there. Removing the intake manifold and working from the top would help a LOT but that's probably way more work than just struggling with it from underneath the car..

As for the lines and fittings, the dealer WILL **** you. Just the water/coolant feed pipe is $107 or something outrageous like that. That's just the pipe too.. the silicone hoses and fittings are extra. Your best bet is to stalk the FS section and get everything from a wrecked MSP or come up with something custom.

I don't boost in 1st either, but I'll get on it in 2nd.. and it does pull pretty hard. I usually try to let the engine get to ~4500 rpm before I punch it all the way, my understanding is that the low end torque is what destroys automatics so I try to avoid getting on it below 4000 rpm.

As for AutoX, if you have tiptronic you're set. I just did my first one a couple weekends ago and it was AWESOME! 2nd redlines around 70 mph on the automatics and most AutoX courses won't ever have you going faster than that, and with the quick spool up time of the T25 you'll be hauling some serious ass!! Here's a short clip if any of you are interested in seeing how fun an auto P5-T can be ;)

what class are u running?...i was thinking of autoxing mine but im pretty sure ill be shoved into sm

best tips i would give about doing a turbo install:

for the oil sender, use a sandwich plate instead of removing the stock oil pressure sender...much less risk of the sender breaking off inside of the block and also a whole lot easier to remove the turbo setup if u need to...the sandwich plate sits in between the block and the oil filter and also allows u to install aftermarket oil temp/pressure guages...

for the coolant lines, make your own with as tough hoses that u can find (steel braided preferably) since it gets so hot...i broke 3 rubber hose lines before completely replacing it with reinforced lines (and a heat wrap)...i highly recommend using a banjo fitting for the hookup at the turbo since it is pretty tight there and the banjo fitting gives fewer places for the lines to leak...

and if u did the coolant bypass mod, u can just use those coolant outlets to attach the hoses from the turbo to...saves a lot of money from the dealership route

Yep, Street Modified is what they shoved me into. It's a very competitive class but I did pretty good for my first time. Khaosman from Des Moines with the black P5-T got first place at that event, so our cars are more than capable of spanking some Evo and Scooby asses. But then again, he does have a manual tranny with a lightweight flywheel (that car is SOOOO fast even at only 9 psi!!!), AWR coilovers and a MOMO steering wheel (the steering wheel is awesome, it's like driving a go-kart).

ahh...good to know...maybe ill take a crack at it one of these days...i live right up the street from one of the autox courses

i run at STS... trying to get a sticker to make it look like the 5 from the Mach 5.... SM are where the big boys play... hopefully staying in that class until either an EMS, internals or TRUBO!!!

do u guys ever down shift to first in autox? the track here is always full of twisties and not really much straightaways for WOT... i should just stay in 2nd once i get there and just gas it more... i remember my tranny shifting really hard the next 2 weeks when i downshifted to 1st a lot....

for the tranny cooler... do u just take the hoses going to the radiator and hook it up to the cooler?

yep...u can run the new cooler and the existing cooler under the radiator in series...should cool down the tranny fluid more

In my opinion the stock cooler is garbage. It only cools it to around the temp of the coolant. Get a cooler thats very high rated and bypass the stock cooler. When I did my swap, I swapped out my radiator for the msp radiator so the stock cooler was gone anyway.

yeah, since i changed my radiator, im strictly running the aftermarket cooler by itself...im just thinking that running 2 coolers would make the fluid run cooler than just having 1

Common sense would make you think that but since the stock trans cooler is water cooled with the coolant any aftermarket cooler that has a high rating will make it alot more cooler.

I'm with you man, I think the auxillary cooler does a better job by itself than with the radiator. I was talking to Tom about this before and he's got that sweet dual temp sensor setup so he can see temps before and after the cooler. It would be good to see how the temps change with the bypass of the radiator cooler.

would the lightweight pulleys affect the transmission cooler? i hear it may not cool the motor as well with the lighter pulleys... it looks like the tranny cooler runs off its own cooling system so more likely not

Pulleys should have no effect on transmission cooling. The transmission pumps fluid into the bottom of the radiator where it is "cooled" and then pushed back into the transmission. The transmission itself acts as a pump.

I've been monitoring fluid temps lately. Tonight I just bypassed the factory cooler and am relying solely on the aux cooler. My thought is that the factory cooler is actually warming the fluid up too much from the engine coolant. We'll see.

Yea pulleys and transmission have no direct affect on each other as far as fluid is concerned.

Keep us posted on your cooling research Tom. I think you should be seeing lower temps with JUST the aux cooler..
