IF I had to replace my Mazda Premacy (Mazda 5) with a 'like' vehicle, the Honda Stream would be at the top of a very short list.

(YES, for the love of all things that are holy, I KNOW it's not a sliding door vehicle, please get past that and take a look)

What vehicle would you get if you 'HAD TO' i.e. they recalled all M5 and stopped making them... what could replace your M5?

More pictures here and when I get a chance I can post some pictures of a stream all fixed up here in Japan.

(Note: NO they don't sell the stream in the USA) (braindead

Peace!(rei)

As a Honda Fit owner I can't help but like the Stream. The seventh seat is a big plus. I'm curious how it compares to the 5 in cargo room.

I've been favorably impressed with the Hyundai Elantra Touring (i30)
I know, no sliders, but here in the US market, it's really the only real competitor for the 5. The Rondo is outclassed, imho.
Big plus for the Elantra Touring is availability of a manual trans, even with the upmarket equipment package, something Mazda should look at closely.
I hate the fact that manual trans choices in the US are limited to silver, grey and red base Sports....

Have you seen that Youtube video from a couple years ago where the Mazda5 2.3 outran the MPV 2.3 turbo, JDM Odyssey, and Stream?

They already recalled them and that did not prevent me from buying a 2nd one (lol2)

If you live in Asia or Europe I guess it is an easy call, here in the US and Canada you only have the Rondo, so no thanks (yupnope)

If it wasn't for the rear facing seats I would think of replacing one of them with a MazdaSPEED3 or a Subaru Impreza XRX HB, or I'd be more than happy to get a wagon, a VW Sportwagen maybe. I'm just getting bored of 2 of the same vehicles (dunno)

I disguise SUVs and standard minivans (except a VW Routan maybe) so damn, few choices...

I only got to peak into one at the fireworks show back in July, but seemed same or a bit larger IMO.

Not bad, but a bit small in the ass is it not? I mean if you're going to go 'family' go all the way and get some fat ass front wheel drive Mazda 5 (j/k) (crazy)

(attn) No because you did not post a link !! (google) = (yupnope) can't find it.

I'd replace my M5 with a Premacy! lol

Ha ha ha, nice! (wink)

MazdaSPEED3

mazdaspeed_3-thumb.jpg

ha ha ha, that is the Demio here in Japan and it's SO GUTLESS, No offence, I agree Id get a Premacy WAY before I'd get one of those. (hear ya)

Subaru Impreza XRX HB,

subaru-impreza-wrx-sti-101.jpg

... that's a car, sports car, cool, but not in the same class IMO.

VW Sportwagen

Now we're talking !! I could go for that !!! (boom08) NICE !

Now whose fault is that? (crazy)

I disguise SUVs and standard minivans (except a VW Routan maybe) so damn, few choices...

True, very true.... hey move to Japan like me, they've got 1,000's of car types here, .... but sometimes... I sort of DON'T like so many car types, then again, ... I remember that in da USA 90% of the American People are on STOCK RIMS and tires and I .... ((cringe)) ... then all of a suddent, whoosh all those thoguhts go bye bye. (drive)

From the land of Rice...(bolt)

?? Not quite sure I understand this comment. What are SUVs disguised as? (disguised as trucks?). Actually most of the smaller SUVs are actually designed around cars so the ride is alot better than the truck-like SUVs.

I think he meant 'despise' when he wrote 'disguise'.

Ha ha... makes sense now. Sorry about misunderstanding that.
Funny thing is that they sound alike but aren't even close in spelling.

I keep on forgetting that this is an international board, so spelling can be easily mistaken... sorry about that.

This question was asked in the Mazda5 Owner's Quiz thread (specifically what other vehicles were you considering, and what would you have bought if the Mazda5 didn't exist). I had **WAY** too much free time one night and decided to compile a tally of all 229 posts from that thread. Here's are the top 15 vehicles that we might be driving if the M5 didn't exist:

Rondo 30 votes
CRV 25
Matrix 25
Mazda3 20
Mazda6 19
Odyssey 19
Jetta Wagon 17
Sienna 17
Fit 16
MPV 15
RAV4 13
xB 13
Forester 12
Element 11
Passat Wagon 11

Frankly, I didn't even know the Rondo existed until I joined this Forum. No one in my family nor my spouse's family has ever driven Korean. I'm surprised by the Matrix and Fit ranking so high considering they're both considerably smaller. And there does seem to be a slight Mazda family bias.

You can add another Rondo to list.
That was actually the car I was looking at first before I bought the Mazda5.

Thanks! (cool)

Thanks for the tally, and YES you DID have wayyyyy too much time that night, ... :)

Whew!.. that was close.

Still no matter HOW much they TRY to fix up the RONDO, it still looks very very Fugly to me !!

I'm not talking about cars in the same class, you asked what would you replace it with, so I just replied :p

ha ha ha, that is the Demio here in Japan and it's SO GUTLESS, No offence, I agree I’d get a Premacy WAY before I'd get one of those. (hear ya)

It would not be a Demio, it would be an Axela (a MAZDASPEED Axela to be precise)

But is the car so gutless? Compared to the Mazda5 NA 2.0L or a 2.3L, a DISI 2.3L w/turbo and less weight means nothing then? (lol2)

True, point taken ;)

I know, and still IMO not the best in that class, there are better 'little 4 door sporty jobs' that can do better then the Dimio, I mean, Axela.

But is the car so gutless? Compared to the Mazda5 NA 2.0L or a 2.3L, a DISI 2.3L w/turbo and less weight means nothing then? (lol2)

Don't know about all that, but the Dimio is gutless here, ...

1.5L 2007- 1,498 cc (1 L; 91 cu in) I4 (ZY-VE) 113 PS (83 kW; 111 hp)@6000, 139 Nm (103 lbft)@4000

SPECS

Don't mean to rain on anyones day, sorry, just pointing out a fact about the Demio.

HOWEVER, I DO AGREE.. the MAzda 3, NOW that... sure...it's fast and rocks the body... take a look see...

The Yaris is only 108 HP or something yet it's Canada's #4 seller. #1, 2, and 3 goes to Civic, Corolla, and 3.

Thanks Sarge for the heart attack. . .as a former multi-Honda/Acura owner this would have been a really hard question to answer, if it were coming Stateside.

What's the BHP option(s)? Given the target US market for this, we'd probably see an anemic Civic motor if it ever puddle-jumped. Although, the Honda sticks are real smooth. . .and a chip, intake, etc. could sweeten the deal.

Of course a little competition could improve the breed. How about this for a Car and Driver Shootout: "Mazdaspeed5 Vs. Honda Stream Type-S"
