Holes in the cup holders

Can anyone tell me why there are holes along the side of the cup holders in the front area? They don't seem to serve any purpose. Thanks, Ted

Trying to figure you description out. My cup holders have holes in them on the top surface where the door/flap surface meets up. The holes have rubber bushings in them to cushion the door so it doesn't rattle.

2011 GT - Theres a slot cut along the bottom back of the cup holder. I have alread lost change thru the slot.

That's probably the holes I am talking about. They are rectangular cut outs wide enough for a quarter to fit through. They are almost at the bottom of the cup holder along the back surface. Any idea why they are there. It is almost like they forgot to put an led light there or something. I wonder how hard it would be to do just that, or should I cover them with electrical tape?

Could they be there to drain liquid if you were to spill?

I figured it out. It is actually one long cut out when you remove the divider. It is there so you can remove items that my fall though the gap in the lid, when it is opened. it is also continuous with the latch holes in the center console. It has me thinking about running small wires/lcds from the charger in the console to the cupholders.
