Hey All

If you read in the manual, it says the MP3 will perform the best with 91 octane, but 87 octane atleast.

well 87 it is then. these cars aren't designed to race corvettes and 91 octane isn't gonna get you there any quicker

true. but the higher octane gas will keep your air/fuel from combusting too early...which will cause a knock in the motor...so it's best to run the high octane.

It's not going to cause a knock in the motor, because the motor is built to run with 87 octane. It will just perform better (as it says in the manual) with 91 octane.

I've had slight knocking/pinging at low-loaded rpms on the lower octanes. It's not as bad with the mid-grade stuff. But I just use premium now just to keep it safe, and I'm still getting 30+mpg.

no, the ecu gives advanced timing. when you 87 octane, the ecu resets the timing to p5/es timing... so, if you want it to run properly, use high-octane gas...if you switch from high to low, you can hear the motor ping until the ecu retards the timing. you should read-up more about your car.

I've read up alot on the car. I'm not saying it won't perform with 87, I'm simply saying that you can run 87 octane. Read the manual.

Read...The...Manual

Quote from the bottome of Page 4-2:

*2.0-liter engine (Special Edition)
Your Mazda will perform best with a premium unleaded fuel haveing an octane rating (antiknock index) of at least 91 [(R+M)/2 method].

You may use a regular unleaded gasoline with a rating from 87 to 90; this will slightly reduce performance.

NO ******* s***. you can run 87 octane...is it a good idea? the ecu was designed to run high octane gas...it has to adjust to run the 87...and yes, if you were to switch from 91 down to 78, THERE WILL BE A PING IN THE MOTOR until the ecu resets the timing.

why the **** buy a damn car and not run the recommended fuel? that's a waste. sell the car to someone who can take care of it and appreciate it for what it is. if you can't afford the gas, get a ******* hybrid.

I don't know anyone who runs 78 octane, infact I've never seen it. But in that case, sure your right.

All I was saying all along is that you "can" run 87 octane, for some reason it just took you this long to see that. Mine personally doesn't knock by running 87 octane.

smart ass...it was a type-o...and yes, it'll run it fine...it isn't good to switch...and honestly, why buy the car if you're not going to put the recommended fuel in it?

You just keep saying the same thing I do dipshit. All I said was "it can run on 87 octane." Read your post, you just said it yourself....again. I understand your point behind the "recommended fuel." Everyone understands that. All I did was point out what it said in the manual. Hop off your high horse, it's not going forward any.

hey dude...chill a little............the only reason i use 87 octane is cuz im a man. and being a man means that i *obviously* dont read any instructions. So therfore I just assumed that since the mp3 was in a sense a protege (which is just a regular car) that it would use 87. Ive never had a single problem on it. But if I start using the medium grade stuff so you guys think it will take a little time for my engine to adjust through it? this wouldn't be a problem right?

I really dont think it with have to get use to. If anything it might run even better, who knows.

I have always run at least 93 octane in all of my cars, and I have had 14 in total. I think the car runs better and cleaner with the higher octane-keeping the injectors from being gummed up from bad gas. The extra money is worth the peice of mind I get. And our cars get great gas mileage, 26 mpg the last 2 tank fulls. And it lasts like a week and a half usually- highway and city driving.
