Help with Split sec AFC

I just hook up my old IBM thinkpad to the afc with the 9 pin rs232 cable. I was able to read the real time RPM and vac pressure, but was not able to read or write to the ECU. It kept telling me that it couldn't connect to the ecu.

Does anyone here know what is going on?

thanks!

After you open up customer, are you able to use the 2 buttons to the right to connect and disconnect from the afc?

Yes, I was able to connect from that screen. I then open the map screen, but couldn't read or write to the ECU (the engine is off, ign is on).

With the map screen open, connected to the car, what happens when you click on the upper lefthand buttons. One "writes too" and the other "reads current map" ? Are they active buttons? Do you get any error message?

They are active buttons. I get an error msg that states "error connecting to ecu." I've rechecked all the wires just moments ago and still can't figure out what's wrong.

it sounds like your doing every thing right... if you were able to read the rpm and vac in real time then you should be able to read and write... I reflashed the afc with the supermap right before i took it off my car to send to you..

i dont know why you wouldnt be able to read or write

Maybe it's the belkin rs232 cable (connected to teh com port on my old IBM thinkpad) I bought? However, like you said I was able to record in real time, but not read or write to the ecu in the map screen.

I've just reinstalled the r4 software over again and will give it another try later.

I'm hoping to get this issue strighten out eventually. I would like to get a dyno for my car later so that I can get a new map from John.

Just tried to reconnect with my laptop after downloading and updating all drivers. Well, after spending 15 mins in 37 degrees weather, I've decided I'll wait and give split sec a call on monday.

hmm, i have a different cable, mine`s USB. did u try all the other possible COMs? i used to have to connect with com 2 or 3 or somethin. also, wat versions of windows work with the R4 software vs the version of windows ur running? were u trying to write at the fuel map screen? go to view at the top and click fuel map. then u can change values and at the top left u have buttons to read/write at the fuel map screen. but maybe u should try all COMs also.?

I use a USB-Serial cable for mine, but I would suggest switching COMs. I'm not quite sure why it'll receive data, but won't write/send to the unit.

I'm using windows 2000 professional with the R4 software.

On the main screen I was able to connect to the ecu, but couldn't read or write to the ecu on the fuel map. got "error communicating with ECU."

Switching COMs didn't work. I was able to connect to COM 1.

sorry I didnt see this sooner, yes with older laptops the com port isnt the best options for connecting to anything really...if you dont match the transfer rates it will make your life hell...for older laptops I usually suggest getting the usb cable connection...My gateway I use in the track car is a 2000 and uses the serial port fine, but my 98 thinkpad wanted none of that nonsense...i actually got the thinkpad to work after abou 20 different driver installs to fix the transfer rate issues...

no your not, I know there were a few others that had this issue, let me dig through my emails and see if i can find them. We've never used the usb connection here at the shop, so I'm kind of at a loss for how to help you. The only information I can relay is what other past members have responded that worked. Hmm on that note give split second a call directly and speak to any of their engineers. I'm 100% sure they can help you with this issue. But before you call have your laptop by you and ready to go so when they ask you somethign you'll be able to try it right then.
