so my mom has a '96 miata mx-5. she's been going through some health problems and has been kinda down over all. the one thing that always picks her up is driving her miata. i wanted to get her something for the car, nothing major, maybe $200 limit. i got her a new shift knob, other than that it's stock.
any suggestions? thanks!

short throw shifters are a waste on a Miata. It's already short enough ;)

but an intake would be nice. It'll give a couple of horses, but the sound it creats as you open the throttle is thearepy :)

somehow I suspect that a couple extra hp here or there will probably be lost on her..

go for something asthetic.. door sills, trim rings for the vents, replace some worn out interior bits, sateelite radio kit... something like that maybe?

go here and cruise around..

If asthetic modifications are in your mom's taste, perhaps a set of vinyl racing stripes? Just a suggestion. rx7gslse posted some good tips in my opinion.

A bit more info would be helpful; does she enjoy spirited driving or, generally, car overall?

a picture of you two together on the desh is probably good enough for her...if she's like most woman, she won't be able to tell an intake from a dog's leg, not the mention little things like desh trim or s shifter

That's quite a good suggestion. Perhaps such a pic can be taken candidly with the Miata as an obvious background feature. Then surprise her with a tasteful placement of said picture.

I'd go with the "I heart My Miata" Shirt. Window Tint? maybe some glow pedals?

i'd suggest you to wash her car really good, very clean including interior, so when she sit inside, feels like "fresh" for her.....and it only costs your effort.

the car washing is actually a really good idea cause i know that if i cleaned my moms car she would feel so good.

heh, I did that for my mom the other day. Cleaned her Mazda 3 inside and out..even smelt new when I was done. The I took off the snow tires, and put her summer tires and rims back on. It's amazing how even simple things make people so happy sometimes. I suggest you clean the car, make a shirt that says I LOVE MOM, and get someone to take a nice picture of you with the car...wrap, and place in the car for her to find. Make sure to point out that the car is clean, and she'll want to cruise, then she'll dinf the picture, and she'll think it's very sweet. Also, spend the 200 on things to make the car better for her, something she'll want...maybe the seats are worn..get seat coveres..maybe the mats are done for, replace the mats...maybe she wants to go fast...get something go fast. I'm sure she'll appreciate anything you do.
