help!! why i should get a protege5...

One of my friend is thinking to get a Jetta GL 2.0 and I suggested to get a PR5. Anyone has experience with Jetta?
Thanks

Jettas have serious reliability issues, especially with expensive-to-diagnose weird electrical problems.

My friend showed me the comparison that she found on JDpower.com between 03 Protege and 03 Jetta. It seems that Jetta is much batter. For example Mechanical Quality Jetta has 4 points out 5 but Protege only has 2, performance Jetta has 5 and Protege has 2, also Jetta has 5 on overall appeal Protege has 3. How did they compare those cars?

JD Power ratings don't agree with anyone else's and I really don't put a lot of faith in them. Consumer Reports is more consistent with my experience and with all the other ratings. Check out Edmunds and Consumer Guide too, but I really recommend Consumer Reports - they're a nonprofit and test the hell out of cars.

I believe you will find that reliability is a known weak spot for the Jetta. If you are happy in a Jetta, more power to you. Corollary: your friend wants a Jetta and you suggested a PR5. Of course she is going to find whatever ratings support her choice over yours.

One of my close friends just bought a brand new 2004 Jetta.
OMG...I HATE that car. I feel like Im 7' when I sit in the damn thing!
Im 5'7" ok people?...decent size for a female, and I have to smush in the back seat of that car. I have smashed my head getting out several times (rant) and also hit my tailbone on the side of the doorframe trying to get into the car because the door doesnt open far enough to allow easy access. (argh)

Overall...for passengers....the car sucks. OK? lol (notcool)
As far as handling it seems decent, I havent driven it, but shes a speed demon and does good with it.

Tell your friend to heed your advice and stick with the P5 or he'll regret it. His friends will be nagging him nonstop cuz they wont want to ride in his car lol!

Maybe they had blindfolds on and got the two cars confused??? ;)
Either that or they were total dumbasses and have no taste in cars :p

My theory is that JD Power often pays attention to brand name cachet and price more than it does to the car. VW is supposed to be reliable and is German and costs more, while Mazda has no special reputation for most people.

The appeal ratings are a manifestation of crack use, pure and simple.

I have same feelings, maybe they tested Jetta VR6 or something. I went to a VW dealer with her at MD and test drive the car, just like MazdaDriverChic said it is too damn small. Power is pretty good for the 1.8T model but not for 2.0 and also I feel that Jetta is much heavier than PR5.

If your friend was to drive, and I mean really DRIVE both cars, I have every confidence they would make the right decision, especially if they are considering a Jetta 2.0L (poor-handling, base-looking car that it is!)!! If they don't, a re-evaluation of priorities behind the wheel is in order, and perhaps a re-evaluation of friendship ;-)!!

Mechanical quality? Performance?

Yeah, if you get a 1.8T or VR6 then, duh, of course you'll have more power.
Our cars still handle better and are more reliable. Jettas are full of problems.

My sister, her husband, and her friend all have Jettas, for longer times but less miles than I have my P5 (60K miles). They all had eletronic problems (with windows) and her husband had to take in the car twice for something with the engine (1.8T), don't remember what it was, but he had to drop car off.

Check Consumer Reports.
They were comparing 1999-present brands for problems. Mazda was one of the 5 or 6 manufacturers that have been consistenly reliable (less problems) since then, along with Honda, Toyota, Lexus, and some others.

The general appeal of Jettas is only that they see an European car and think "wow, sturdy", but they don't realize many are built in Mexico. Can't compare them to Mazdas in the appeal since we're still young in our image in the NA market.

Jetta's are for people who REALLY want a BMW or a Mercedes and just plain can't afford one.

IMHO

Get an Echo....they're way FASTER! LOL
yeah echo's are faster because they don't weigh anything

echo hatch, 1080/108 = 19.26lbs/hp
protege5 2716/130 = 20.89lbs/hp

pwnz by the echo.. damn communism

Well, I guess these people can start going for the Mazda3 now. They're very European looking and have some Jettaish lines.

umm no the echo can pwn the aveo too and look better doing it LOL

the aveo is cheaper but is heavier with less power and a crappier engine there are turbo kits for the echo to get it to 150 HP, thats 150 HP in a 2000lbs car
