2014 Mazda Cx5 Touring
I noticed the paint on my car was chipping away in spots all over the hood of the car. I have taken it to three different body shops who all have no idea what could have caused it and the Mazda dealer is claiming it has to be something I got on the car. There was never anything on the hood of my car that i noticed and it has continued to break away in more spots as the days progressed. Any ideas? It is only on the hood of my car and a spot looks like it is beginning on the driver side fender.

Are you parking under a tree or some other covering that is leaking or dropping things into your car? Your good looks to be covered with brown spots, and the areas with missing paint seem to have the same brown as an outline around them. It's quite possible that some sort of sap or contaminant is eating right through the paint. Have you checked your roof to see if it's happening up there too?

How often do you wash the car and how long do you let it go between when you see those dark spots showing up on the paint and when you take it to get it washed?

Could be bird dropping or hard water etching. Very common when either one is left to sit on paint for extended periods of time and in direct sunlight. Alkaline watermarks (Calcium + Magnesium) or acidic contamination (bird dropping, acid rain, industrial fall out) can cause SERIOUS damage if not removed ASAP.

There is major hard water spotting on the surrounding areas of the etching. I suspect the damage is more than that one section. I'm sure your clearcoat/paint has been eroded elsewhere. Do you park near a sprinkler?

Also don't eliminate the possibilities of vandalism. It could be brake fluid which can simply lift paint over night.

You say there's never been anything on the hood, yet there are all those disturbing dark stains around the lifted paint. Seems pretty obvious that something got on the hood and caused the paint to lift in those areas. Reminds me of the old story about shaking a can of coke and opening it so it sprays on a hot hood sitting out in the sun, but who can say with certainty what it might have been simply by looking at these pictures? Have you thought about making an insurance claim? I suspect you're not going to get anywhere with Mazda on this.

The only spot on the car that has any sort of damage is the hood and maybe that small spot on the fender, we've searched the car over numerous times to find more spots. I don't park under a tree and it's parked down a driveway at night or in the garage. The car was washed on a Friday and these marks appeared that Sunday & the car wasn't driven at all on that Saturday. The marks on the hood are from the dirt road I went down to go to a friends house and I haven't cleaned it yet. The car is washed once or twice a week since I've had it. Yeah, I figured I would get no where with Mazda, I just had no idea what it was or what caused it and was hoping that they could give me an answer. Since the spots are so random and sporadic over the just the hood, we can't figure out what it is!

Those dark stains don't look like they came from dry dirt...

If there was a fault in the foundation for the paint or the paint itself, the problem would progressively get to the point it is now over the time period of at least a few weeks. Progression would be noticeable (E.G. bubbling, cracking, etc). Damage from contamination (depending on severity) can occur within days.

All three of the circled spots are bubbling and are about to pop like the rest:

Are you saying that those didn't appear until after you drove down a dirt road (and after some cracking had already occurred)? As SayNoToPistons said, it could be vandalism. I was thinking maybe something the car wash place used could be causing it, or maybe chemicals were recently sprayed on the dirt road to stop dust ups and that might cause it, but that wouldn't explain why it was limited to only one area. If either of those were the cause the whole car would be subjected to it and should be showing the same problems.

That looks like a chemical got on the paint and is causing the problem. It is from outside-in, based on those photos. As to what go on there? Hard to know. Those stains suggest a liquid was dropped/sprayed on your hood, and it ate away at the paint. Massive bummer. - JP

well same thing happened to mine, but it at the rear the plastic area(thank God) which isn't metal, so yeah I also took it to the dealer and blaming me for it or whatever, I was just cleaning it with wax, then it came off, can't show you a picture of it now cause I already covered it with vinyl. but will try to take a pic of with with the vinyl on ?

I think mazda still has issues when it comes to paint jobs(just my opinion people) cause of all brand of vehicle we ever owned, mazda is the one whos gives me trouble the most. I really like the car, but dang the quality, warranty and service is just bad!

yeah I'm just waiting for more to show up. No these happened before I drove down the dirt road. I totally understand if it was something that got on the hood then Mazda has no responsibility for it. I'm just confused as to what it could be so I can prevent it from happening to the rest of my car. So frustrating!

Could be unfortunate corrosive small drip event from somewhere. Last week I was cleaning mine and there were several stubborn globs of thick black grease on the front bumper. Who knows where it came from...

Definitely remove wet leaves and bird droppings asap though. My last mazda was blue and some wet leaves left a permanent etch on the hood in little time.

Might want to wax your car. Something in your environment (intentional/accidental/fallout/wildlife) may be causing that and maybe wax will prevent/slow it In the meantime.

It could be that a car you were driving behind was leaking brake fluid and you just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That looks like acid or something else !!! It`s definitly looks chemical.......Is there any angry neighbour in the surroundings ?

just stumbled on this thread, i have stains which look similar, about a half dozen, mostly on the roof and one on the hood, that car is a week old and i just noticed them after a wash.

bazooka joe, this looks like some sort of contaminant on the paint. There does not look to be any damage yet, but just in case I would clay bar those areas and see if they go away before they can do anything to the paint...

thanks for the info, the car is going into the dealer thurs, i'll show them the tsb...my car could have been her/US in the early part of 14 so that cold weather rapgard may be all it is
