[Help] Looking to Paint emblems black

mazaspeed has no pins. m has pins. 3 has no pins.
front emblem has clips, one of which i broke when i removed it. oh well.

to remove the emblems, start peeling if it's hot enough. or use fishing line to peel them off.

i'm going to tell you the easiest way man...

go to auto zone and buy:
duplicolor adhesive promotor
duplicolor semi-gloss black (if you want a flat/satin look)

take a scotchbrite pad and scuff them up well, then wash them with soap and water. follow the directions on the back of the can. use about 2 light coats of promoter and then about 3 light coats of paint. if you want it to look really good, you can buy a tack cloth from auto zone also and gently wipe off debris between coats. stick the emblems back on with the original adhesive.

my emblems have been painted for about 8k miles and have no chips, scratches, fading of any kind.

let me know if you have anymore questions. good luck!

(iagree)... here is mine i got this on silver. got bored and decide to paint it black :)

just wondering. how do you sand all the nooks and crannys between the letters and all that crap?

well it's pretty hard to get ever nook and cranny but the scotch brite pads do a pretty good job. i wouldn't worry about it too much. like i said, i've done this to my last car too and never had any chipping/flaking/fading, nothing. you'll be 100% fine, i promise.

Carefully

No, but seriously, I only scuffed mine, I didn't sand it like I was trying to take the chrome off. I used ripped pieces from large sheets of sand paper, so I just took corners and worked them into the nooks and crannies. It isn't going to be awful if they aren't 100%

Let us see them when you're done!

To take the back emblem off... where are the pins? on the sides on an X axis of on the tops and bottom on a Y axis?

Could i just get a hair dryer, heat it up, then start pulling it off straight as to not break the pins off? any adhesive residue on the paint?

The "pins" are plastic pieces built into the flying M, both near the center. The wholes have adapters in them to receive the pins when you press it back on.... but still use tape too.

I didn't need a hair drier, just used some fishing line and a paint scraper with a rag wrapped around it.

This seems like a kick-ass, easy mod. I saw the black out emblems on some vendor website. They were selling them for a ridicuolous amount, though. I wonder if they were selling actual blacked out emblems, or just something to do it to the ones already on the car.

Black painted emblems FTW!

yeah, skeet unit sells them for a fortune. i guess they use automotive paint but who the hell cares? mine look perfect and cost about 10 bucks.

nice man. for me, it was a completely necessary mod. i don't like chrome on my cars.

Looks great! Only difference is I left the 3 off ;) What did you use to stick them back on? Are they flush?

yeah, i left the three off of mine too. but i took the mazdaspeed back off because the 3m tape i bought sticks out too far. i gotta find some thin stuff...

i used 3m tape but not the 1/2" its like 7/8" or somethin...it does stick out a bit but id rather use that cuz i also tried that 3m emblem 'glue'/adhesive and it left somekind of...i dunno how to explain...'film', where at a certain angle you can see where it was applied...i used it on the M since that'll always be there but on the mazdaspeed+3 i used tape...you cant tell it sticks out unless your face is in it at an angle

Mine is the same way, but I'm picky about the details.... arg.....

i did this last friday btw. i'm such a clutz though cause when i was peeling off the "mazdaspeed" it cracked right at S/P.... Although it didnt crack all the way through and it really hard to see, i have it up on the car. It's kinda ghetto rigged but the paint came out perfect and i was wondering what you guys did and what methods you guys used to put it back on cause the stock adhesive isnt sticky anymore.

I came up with a method where i heat up the double sided tape to make it really gooey and i pretty much stretched it along the letters. its not perfect right now and i was planing on taking it back off and redoing it to make it look perfect. anyone else try this, tell me how it worked...
